Title: wrangler jeep heavey on juice any ideas
Post by: 72 watch on January 12, 2011, 08:41:56 AM
hi birtys me again brought a wrangler jeep 1993 2.5petrol. its had a engine rebuild and been serviced filters plugs ect. drove it back from sailsbury on half of tank and drove round a couple of days seemed ok on the fuel. put £20,00 in and done 30miles. just drank the fuel. this was driving at 1500 revs around town so was not heavey footed.  ive taken a plug out and its a nice light brown colour. as i was  thinking lamba sensor but not to sure if its that.. but the problem i have is when its hot the engine throws over abit b4 it will start and when it does start its just like its flood as the smell of petrol is strong, soon clears it self when fires up. only thing i did check is that the tyres had about 24psi in and when i checked the net they should have 34psi. so ive only just corrected that but cant see that making abig diffrence. any suggestions plz

Although now £20 only buys a shade over 3 gallon its still bad,my 6.6 litre averaged more than that.Bubbas the man for the older Jeeps,im sure he will be along later with some wisdom

first off make sure you record ya mileage and fuel best is to fill er up and do a hundred miles then you will have a much better idea

but please note the 2.5 is not really any more economic than the 4.0 and as we all know tatting about is a killer to mpg  whilst it sounds i bit steep check first before you start spending cash

1993 Jeep Wrongler 2.5 City 16mpg Hwy 19mpg Combined 17mpg
1993 Jeep Wrongler 4.0 City 15mpg Hwy 18mpg Combined 16mpg

(US Gallons)

Pretty close - why bother with the 2.5, given that it has more issues than the 4.0.
Anyway, 16mpg US is 19mpg Imperial for city driving, and twice what the OP is getting.

good point panic is it still standard ???

how old is the engine rebuild could it still be a bit tight and still running in ? also i wonder why it needed a rebuild a solid engine much like the 4.0 normaly

Mike posted an issue seen on 2.5 petrol engines, but I can't remember what it is. Doesn't affect the
4.0.

hi im running 31.50/15    and the engine is origianal at 130000 miles .  the motor no modifications never bin off rd. but when the engine is warm it dont start straight away it has to throw over a bit then when it fires up its just like its flooded as strong smell of petrol but soon clears.

It is funny to see the fan cowling on a 2.5 Wrangler is nearly as big as the engine

I would think it could be something along the line of either lambda sensor, or tps, or  altho you said its been rebuilt what work was done with the  injectors?  could it be worth running some redex thru it to clean up the fuel system?

the yellow yj I had , was fitted with 31' at's and  did a lot better than that.altho it was gutless and would run the opposite way from a hill, unless you were off roading and it went everywhere it could on the tyres it had.

Don't bother with that shit. Put 100ml of pure acetone in the tank and fill up. It really works.

A bad upstream O2 sensor can cause excessive fuel use. So can bad or disconnected engine temp sensors which will fool the computer into thinking it's -40 degrees and massively enrich the fuel mix. I think a 93 has two temp sensors but not sure which would be used for fuelling calculations. A bad O2 sensor shouldn't cause issues till the sensor warms up as they are not used during initial warm up.

im not comparing it to the rangy and my rangy has loads of torq as ive had the turbo modifyed bigger to put more air in the cylinders and had to fit a dump valve . it wont live with  my rangy but i was talking on the basis of the comment of sluggishness and it is not sluggish.i dont dought you for one minute that they are sluggish as i stated i know nothining about wranglers so i dont know how they should perform.  but you talk landys and rangerovers there is not much i dont know. and as for my rangy its like shit off a shovel and pull a house down.  lol
