Is there a float switch on the coolant expansion tank?

Looking at the old manual to my 2000 TD XJ, the top left of the dash has a bottle image which looks to be half full.  This is telling you the windscreen washer fluid is low.

The only other fluid one is coolant temperature (waves with a thermometer symbol), and indicates overheating, which will be seen on the temperture gauge.

Another part of the display will show diesel engine related problems, and the low water coolant level is indicated with a container half full and an x in it.

It could be the switch that operates this warning lamp has gone duff... it happened on my cherokee diesal....

The best thing of course is to replace the switch , it plugs into your plastic water bottle...

Or....  you can do what i did , and pull the switch out , disconect the wires , and join the wires together....puts out the annoying light , but of course you then have no warning of low water level....

My diesal is running on steel seal too....done thousands of miles with no problems...    good luck....
