Title: Damn sensor??
Post by: Manda on November 17, 2005, 10:07:22 PM
Ok guys, I have an intermittent splutter going on.

This is in "Mandaish" so I apologise in advance.

- Intermittent because it doesn't happen every journey
- starts with a small 'lag' in power, a stutter before acceleration
- develops into slow, jerking movement accented with popping sounds
- revs fluctuate around 1000rpm, but if still moving will drop off completely and stall
- oil pressure gauge fluctuates
- dash lights fade but battery gauge doesn't indicate any problems
- if left idling for a few minutes appears to recover until I drive off again
- possible happens after hard acceleration and 'backing off' before accelerating again
- changing between gears whilst it happens seems to confuse it!!

Any ideas? Please!!!!  :(

(ps I am talking about my Jeep!!!!!)

strange, I would have said throttle sensor but the lights going dim in the dash & oil pressure gauge say otherwise. Check  the engine earth strap it tight and not broken and the loom plugs/sockets in the engine bay by the bulkhead (disconnect, spray in WD40 and put back together)

Done that.

is the oil / dash lights going dim because the engine has died? does the oil pressure drop to nothing or slowly fade?

The oil gauge just moves from the line before 3 back up to 3,
the lights dim as the revs get really low, so probably is just due to engine dying. This does 'self-recover' though if stationary.

see if anyone will let you borrow a TPS to see if it is that, oil pressure and lights are probably due to v low revs. Sounds like waht happened to my old XJ, revs went all over the shop intermittently and real lack of power, was a goosed TPS

It had a new TPS about 12 months ago, but has anyone got a spare I could borrow for a bit?

Any fault codes?  Also what is your speedo doing when this is going on?  I have a dodgy Speed pick up or connector for it which causes the speedo to die intermitently, when that happens the car can sub-idle and stall.

Sounds a bit like what I had with the cam sensor.

Thou I didn't have the guage trickery goin on, or not that I noticed.

As Woody said, have ya got any fault codes 8)

It's throwing up oodles of fault codes, going to reset later and see what it says. I'll let you know.

Sounds a bit like an upstream oxygen sensor to me.

You were apparently right (again) Mike!

I bit the bullet and took my truck to Ryfield full of dread but quoted £39 for diagnostics. Not too bad...

EXCELLENT!! "the sensor that has to do with to exhaust fumes going back up to the engine...... was UNPLUGGED!!" and bless the fellow (who was actually supposed to be on his lunch break) plugged it back in and didn't charge me!!

My truck appears to be splutter free.  :D
