Title: 2004 Cherokee 2.8 CRD - Heater fan switch not working properly
Post by: Simon J on February 09, 2011, 09:37:27 PM
Now that my 2.8 CRD engine warms up properly on the short commute to work as a result of replacing the thermostat, I'm able to enjoy the delights of having a heater these cold mornings but I've now realised that the heater fan is only working on settings 3 and 4 and doesn't blow at all on 1 or 2. A bit of research would suggest that the cause might be a faulty resistor, but if so, where is it located and how easy is it to replace it (and how expensive?); and if not the resistor, any other suggestions?

I have done this.

The procedure can be found on www.lostkjs.com (http://www.lostkjs.com) and www.jeepjk.com (http://www.jeepjk.com).  Just do a search on the forums.

The resistor is located behind the glovebox.  The resistor is not the easiest thing to remove thanks to the connector.

From what I remember, discconect the battery and wait for at least 5 minutes (to allow the airbag capacitor to discharge).

Remove the glove box.  Remove the resistor.  Install new resistor, replace glove box and reconnect battery.

The resistor costs between £20 and £25 (2009 prices).

Thanks, ivanidea, it certainly seems as though it's the resistor. I'll try and pick one up when I'm home next week and it's clearly a DIY replacement job when I return.

Just rang my Jeep dealer back in Belfast (isn't Skype a wonderful thing?) and they keep the resistors in stock as they are a common replacement item! The price is GBP 22.75 (presumably plus VAT) which seems fair enough.

Turns out the UK price is £22.75 including VAT which seems fair enough. I had taken the old one home with me to be sure of getting the right part but on arriving back to a cold and snowy airport at nearly midnight it was only the work of a few minutes to pop the new one in before leaving the car park. Nice to have a controllable heater at last with my new thermostat and a heater blower that works properly.  :icon_biggrin:
