Why do all the Yanks rave on about the transfer case with 2wd 4wd all time 4wd Hi 4wd Hi & swap from the 4wd all time 4wd low is a better system?

I think you are talking about a 242 transfer case like is fitted to all 4.0 auto XJs. I am biased because it's what I own but I think it's the best transfer case option. It is a simple chain driven case, no viscous coupling to go wrong. The options are 2wd hi, 4wd hi with centre diff locked, 4wd hi centre diff unlocked for use on road (good on green lanes, in snow, wet etc.) and 4wd lo for proper offroading. Lots of choice for different conditions, simple like the 231 fitted to wranglers but with a 4wd setting suitable for road use.

Is it a big job to swap to that then

They are talking of the 242HD which was an option on the WJ in the US on certain v8 models, meant to be the best TC fitted to a WJ. Its a bolt up job, you just need new front & rear props to match, BUT IIRC they never made it to the UK so you will only find a non HD 242 which is on a par with a 247 you have already.

The military Hummer has a 242HD with it's own oil-cooling system if you want to get into overkill :icon_twisted:

You'll never find one over here.
