Title: Spare wheel mount
Post by: Yetibob on February 15, 2011, 10:11:16 AM
Hi folks am a newbee so be gentle! i am looking to fit a spare wheel holder onto the tailgate of my 2000 xj but was wondering if a bracket is available from a different make that will fit as all i want is a fixed mount on the tailgate and am not worried about the weight.Would a landrover one do? Any ideas?

never seen it done like that, usually on a separate swing out carrier, but would imagine along with the actual mount you will also need to sort stronger gas struts and hinges.

there are swing out carriers for you model but they seem to be sought after and not that cheap

Yeah am wondering if the weight will be too much but the other carriers are so rare!

have you considered a roof mount?

I would have thought the tailgate wouldn't be strong enough and any flexing is likely to break the rear window.

Either keep the wheel inside or put it on the roof.

tailgate isn't strong enough, plus the swing out origional equipment for the mk1 dont fit the mk2.
