Title: 2000 WJ 4.7 high pressure power steering hose
Post by: haslamg on February 27, 2011, 02:56:33 PM
Bonjour!

Today, I replaced the rear seized u-joint on the driveshaft on my 2000 4.7.  I also had a potter around under the car and noticed the high-pressure hose (the one that comes from the top of the power steering pump) was weeping on the first horizontal rubber section.  The whole section of rubber looks pretty.....juicy... :greggmo:

It looks like the supply and return pipes run right in front of the radiator over to the power steering pump.  All the high-pressure hoses I find on the web are shorter for LHD vehicles.

Has anyone swapped one of these on a 1999-2000 (non-hydraulic fan 4.7)? Just wondering about ease of procedure and how much the part is and if it's a dealer-only item...

Thanks.

Gav

I had a leaky pipe on my power steering , replaced it with some pipe i had , but it just blew to bits , not strong enough..!

As i am out in the sticks in  a Polish forest i tried a local tractor place , got a hose made up from a Russian tractor that did the job nicely...

If you can,t get one , it might be worth trying your local farmers tractor repair garages...

some tractor hoses are good for 200 bar , so quite strong enough for Jeep power steering...

Cheers.

I got one off a broken WJ which I was intending to take to Pirtek to get them to recondition.  However, it's in much better shape than mine so I'll likely just fit it as is.

I got an MOT failure for no power steering.
I took the pump off my 99 breaker last weekend but I could not get the high pressure hose undone without the pipe collapsing. I ended cutting the pipe. Going to try and unscrew it tomorrow. I hope I can get the pipe off my good jeep without damaging it.

Job went well. Disconnect battery.
Socket on breaker bar enabled me to lift belt tensioner and get belt off easily.
Took air filter box off and drained top 2 inches from radiator to get rad top hose off.
Soaked high pressure pipe in WD40 before attempting to undo so no problem.
Then had enough room to put deep sockets through holes in pulley to remove pump.
Then it was easy to get bottom low pressure hose off.

To remove high pressure hose the manual says you have to remove fascia and grille. Then take battery out to get to top of steering box. I don't know if you would have to take radiator out. The manual does not say that you have to.
