Tracy;s xj has suddenly stopped changing in to top or O/D it changes smooth through all other gears, tried to find TCM/TCU not sure where to look ? I was going to do a manual gear change to make sure its not mechanical.
you cannot press the button on gear knob when you want to change gear manually either whether this is related not sure , I have adjusted the throttle valve cable so far,
it starts in N and P ok, and I have pressed brake whilst going along to make sure TC is locked it seems ok, as revs rise when brake pedal is touched
I have codes 12 and 21 come up which appear to be battery related ?
but also got a 45 which is gearbox temp and or O/D switch low voltage not sure which switch this relates to ????
might be one for Dr Mike :017:

Take it the fluid level is good & the colour is nice n red, not burnt etc ?

mk1 or 2?
what do you mean about pressing the gear knob button?
-
That will be the G spot!!!
Darren I believe the NSS is foooooked
-
If the reversing lights are intermitent, thats a sure sign the NSS is in need of love

what do you mean about pressing the gear knob button?
The interlock button won't depress to manually change down a gear unless the footbrake is depressed
It should depress in D to change to 3rd etc
Face lift 97 R plate

sounds like the linkage at the bottom of the shift lever needs adjustment, wonder if you aren't actually getting D just 3

Like I said before, I had this problem but without the button pressing problem and it was the NSS needing a clena. With the button problem maybe scrw is on the right track and the linkage is the problem.

James I wasn't ignoring your advice just need a window of opportunity, because it can be a pig to get off, going to clean NSS at the weekend she needs the car for work today and I"m back to work tomorrow.
also going to adjust all the cables, will unplug the TCM and give it a manual gearchange check this afternoon now I know where the TCM is :banghead:
thanks for replies

I may be wrong Darren so I'd be interested to here the results of the manual gear change test. Like I said, mine didn't have the problem with the gear knob but would refuse to change into top gear even though everything else was fine. As temporary fix when it did it first I pulled over, turned engine off, back on and revved it hard in park and few times and it worked for the rest of the journey but that could just have been luck.

Not sure if it was the NSS or the cable adjustment but she working again :icon_biggrin:
not sure which it was as I reset the cable adjustment when I set up the NSS it was a bit mucky inside probably was the switch
never did the manual gear change check went straight for the NSS
cheers guys :icon_jook:
