Hi ya..does any one know if an XJ rear axle would fit a ZJ vehicle,have started to get a rumble from the back end and just checking out all possibilities,which leads me to ask does anyone know of a Jeep breakers yard around the Midlands area,(or any where ) looking for some interior trim parts,and axle if the above isnt feasable,cheers guys and gals.

no, one is leaf sprung, the other coil, you may be able to swap the diff internals but unsure if the ratios would be the same

any thoughts on a scrappy yard,or trim parts..

hi mate
before you go changing the axle, have you changed the oil?? it can make quite a difference!
as for trim parts, what you after cos i have a load of new jeep bits & might have what you are after..........if you have a part number that would help.....

Hi Paul,I`m not sure about it being changed but I know it was topped up in the last service it had in July,and I believe some "special" oil added to it as well.
I took it to the Jeep agents in Sutton Coldfield for them to check it out but they reckoned there was nothing wrong,..they checked all the oils ..axles trans box etc but I can definitely detect a noise coming from the back end...(perhaps it is just me.
.)
With regards to the trim,I am desperately looking for the a drivers door interior panel,mine has been damaged just by the grab handle,its the light tan colo ured trim,matching the leather trim ,and the interior of the cubby box,gawd knows been tipped in there..

Copey, that sounds exactly what my XJ was doing not long after I got it, so I did the full oil change as you do.....still had the noise :shock: ........... Moral of the story - its not always as bad as you might think :wink:

Hmmmm this thread's got me thinking.
I've seen a few threads about diffs making noises and owners just replacing the whole axle assembly. When your diffs 'go bad' is it because the gears are buggered or is it just all the bearings that need replacing and backlash setting up??
I've just overhauled both my axles - replaced all the bearings and seals and set up the backlash and pinion preloads. To be honest it was relatively easy. Admittedly I do have an aircraft maintenance hangar and associated tooling available but I reckon it could be done in the average garage with minimum specialist tooling.
However if you guys are swapping them out for one from a scrappy 'cos the gear teeth are buggered then I guess that maybe cheaper than replacing the whole diff carrier assembly with new??
Maybe I should go out and buy a set of axles from a scrappy for various Jeep models, overhaul them good as new and then sell them as a swap out unit?

Most common cause of rumbling at the rear is diff carrier bearings. You can change these with no special tools or setup in a couple of hours.

Hi Mike..I tend to hear this noise more at about 55/60-ish,and it appears to decrease on the over run,its like a throb-throb (very technical I know) sort of noise (like when something is in the tread of a tyre),rather than one constant sound,(useless at techie things)...

Like a dry grind..grind...grind, wheel speed related?

wouldn`t say it was quite a grinding noise,(as in ..low brake pads)but yes does tend to be speed related

I'm sure it's been thought of (and it's probably not my place), but I usually start with the easy stuff first...like U-joints (and even brakes, wheels, etc. as mentioned). Some of what you described can be as simple as dry needle bearings, bad u-joint, etc. Not sure what rear axle they put in yours, but our XJ has a Chrysler 8.25. And I think they put D44's in the exports to South America. Both are decent axles...so I'd be looking at the simple stuff first if it were me. Unless of course you plan on building up. ;)

come to think of it...it could be some brake system part rubbing somewhere..

All UK XJs had Dana 35s with the exception of 2.5L petrol versions.
