Took the truck for its MOT this morning, and the welds that hold the track bar bracket on the axle have broken.
Anyone localishh who could weld it up for some beer tokens??
-
How thick/heavy does the weld need to be?
-
T'is about 3mm plate. may you be able to help out?
-
I've got a Mig, it's supposed to manage about 6mm thick, but in reality 3mm is about all it can penetrate. However my welding skills are really shit, if you want to borrow it your welcome. It's in Nesscliffe at the mo but I'm going over there later, I can fetch it back if you want.
-
Cheers, but my welding skills are none existant! I really need to find someone to do the job for me.
Thought I'd ask on here first.
Cheers though mate.
-
I'll give it ago if your really stuck, but I wouldn't like to chance it with something like steering, I tend to burn bloody big holes in things.
Is that place still up the road from you at ditherington, hollyoaks I think their called?
-
Who are they? Is that the truck body place?
-
Welders and fabricators, think they used to do truck bodies. Wouldn't have thought it would be a hard job for them. On the left before you get to the heathgates island.

Is that the weld you had done when your lift was fitted???
-
Nope, the weld which holds the original bracket to the axle!
The new bracket is fine. I think it must be the extra stress that has been put on the factory welds that has bust it.
-
Well, Hollywells turned out to be a great help!.....
"We don't do cars!"
Help please somebody. :?

you've probably looked here but just in case

Chris
There is/was a place on Ainsdale Drive in Harlescott called Shropshire 4x4
don't know what they are like but they may be worth approaching
-
could do it after this weekend, any time during the week, has the mot run out yet?

Just checking lardy!!!
-
I think you have figured it out. :o)
-
Tell you what Chris's track bar mount was fooked, every bit was cracked, think the skyjacker bracket puts far too much stress on the original mounting point. Anyone know a fabricator in Shrewsbury area? The axle needs the whole bracket cutting off and a new one making, its more weld than plate now
-
I binned a complete axle casing last week...........
-
you dont throw jeep bits away :banghead:
-
the casing was all that was left of it...........I only had it for the diff!!!
-
no excuses
-
"oh wait a minute, didn't i bin a transfer case a few weeks before i got my current xj"
-
What Steve said.
Thanks for the help Steve. (Top man!
-
If anyone has a pattern I can probably have copies made but I aint got a clue what I'm looking for, nothing new there.
Sample needed & I'll see what I can get sorted
-
If I get a chance Gaz, I'll try and measure up at the weekend and do a CAD drawing of the required bracket, and e-mail it over to you.
Can your place use AutoCAD drawings (silly question I know, but best to be sure)
-
Autocad, no probs matey, would be just the job.
Take it this bracket would need to be mild steel as it needs welding to other ferrous bits.
Dont forget the material thickness, very important
-
would need 4mm mild steel minimum, attaching it to the axle may be a problem, maybe get 2 U bolts in the design to go around the axle tube?
-
I like that Idea.
-
Still lost but I think we have 5mm we could use depending on size of bracket
-
doesnt have to be complicated, just a U shaped bracket for the track bar to bolt into, and big enough for a solid mount to the axle, "should" be fairly straight forward
-
Humm........ :?
Just had a look see. Don't think the u bolt idea is a goer, but I need to take a better look. It will have to incorporate a new steering stabiliser mount too, as this is part of the stock bracket. Would be nice if I can come up with a bolt on replacement though.
That old axle would have come in real handy KD!

Oh shut up!! Dont you think I know that???
