Do these engines suffer like the earlier 2.5 TD engines... what gearbox do they use....?
Thank inadvance Maf

Run away. It's an XJ diesel with an extra cylinder to go wrong. The gearbox is a 44RE

Yeah that's what I thought about the 3.1 motor, but I'm sure people on here have said they are better?
2.7 Merc CRD unit ok though?
Trying to source a GC diesel for a friend, can't stand Diesel myself....
-
There seems to be a few issues with the 2.7's maybe 2.8 in the KJ?
-
They all have issues. Diesel engines in Jeeps just ain't natural.

this guy may beg to differ
AMC Jeep Cherokee Chief 4x4 Cummins Diesel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i8q4KPP3N2U#)

What sort of power output/fuel consumption does the VM 3.1 offer (before it self destructs)?

Yeah its all wrong, 4 litre petrol with a few mods defo the way forward, happy days
-
layland roadrunner Cummings b series nice but to heavy
-
Can you actually get a 3-4 year old Jeep petrol these days???
-
i drive 2000 miles a week for work and nearly all the jeeps i see have CRD on the back.
tho i did see a nice 5.7 hemi in morrisons last week
-
When it hasn't broken down it produces 138bhp and 283 imperial torques.
-
I googled a road test or two
283 ft/lb torque sounds impressive, 138bhp less so.
Average fuel cons only 24, not worth the hassle over a petrol unless ya doing loads short journeys I think.
And slated for being noisy when pushed hard, like an old tractor :icon_eek:
A XJ 4.0 with sequential LPG is still gonna make more than 138bhp, the engines have proved tough, durable, and can take LPG long term.
Cheap to replace too, 'cos the 4.0 seems to outlive the Jeep

Only good thing about 3.1TDs is they make good donors for 4litres what you want to regear tha axles LOL
