Title: diesel starter motor problems
Post by: duncjeep on March 21, 2011, 08:05:34 PM
Hi ,was wondering if I had to change my starter motor,as it never engages first time.I have to tease the motor into engaging the flywheel and it doesn't sound pretty, but eventually it does connect and spins that vm into a nice quick start. If it is a starter out job ,how easy is it?I have no vm repair manual but did see the starter by removing the front  wheel and looking from underneath, and it looks tight in there :017:,any help would be greatly appreciated.cheers

You have to remove the engine mounting. Carefully check the ring gear. They get chewed up.

OK cheers for that info ,I take it its an engine/gearbox out job if the ring gear is f..ked ,but the motor does eventually engage .would that just be a motor solenoid/spring problem ?

Think its engine mount job...
