is it possible to remove the plates from the ZJ diff and make it an open diff without replacing the carrier?
long term plan is to fit a full locker but budget not there yet, but do need to sort the bearings asap.

No.

though it wouldn't be that easy :010:
so parts options are bearings and plates at £210 or bearings and locker at £400ish
or can anyone think of a different option?

used................charlton re-cyclers?

may have a chance of a free used axle but not deff and TBH i would still want to refurb it before fitting.
need this to be a reliable motorway / tow car it wont go off road, only reason for considering a aftermarket locker is the reliability issues of the original equipment, but would be just as happy with an open diff for now.

Since you got yours have been straining my ears to hear mine............. and I can.....or maybe I'm paranoid......... need mine for just the same reasons as you....................one day the 1 ton will sit on a trailer behind :icon_super: :icon_twisted:

Could you fit an open carrier? Dana 35s on facelift 4.0 XJs normally have open carriers. I'm sure you could get one for very cheap but it would mean a full strip down to re-build

these are the sort of options I'm trying to see if feasible, but as I have limited experience of these things I need some help :100:

I don't know for definite but it makes sense to me. gear ratios and carrier breaks would have to be looked at but as far as I know the XJ and ZG are the same diffs :017:
