Just spotted an oil leak today from the front diff on mt 2002 gr cherokee 2.7. its coming from the gland/seal where the prop shaft goes in from the transmission.
The prop shaft is a queer old thing with a rubber boot and no sign of the uj i was expecting :017:
Couple of questions here, how do i whip the prop shaft off and once thats done will i be able to do the seal without dropping the axle out or dismantling the diff
cheers

prop is held on with 6 or 8 bolts, easy to get off. Seal is easy enough to do but you need to measure the preload on the pinion nut before taking it off to set it correctly when you replace the driveshaft flange

where are the bolts? under the rubber boot? the only bolts I can see are 6 around he circumference of the assy and theyre on;y about 10/12mm so no way they hold the thing together :017:

they are the ones, 8mm IIRC, flimsy as feck but do the job :icon_biggrin:

saw an episode of wheeler dealers were Ed was doing up an E type Jag, he had to do the pinion oil seal,
all he did was mark the nut and pinion thread with a punch then just lined the marks up when he put it back on.
would that be good enough on a Jeep axle?

ideally a torque wrench would be better but if the same parts oare going back on the mark the position it is in now either by a punch or a paint strip (tippex pen) so when refitted tighten back to what it was. there is possible arguments to say it wont be the same torque as origionally installed due to the prestressing of the nut etc but as long as it goes back to the marked position and not less you should be ok
