Title: Front brakes staying on
Post by: thunderflash on April 27, 2011, 08:56:23 AM
Hi,I have a 1996 2.5 ltd Cherokee Diesel and it's just developed this problem. It doesn't happen immediately it progressively gets worse after 10 or twelve miles. I wondered if any one had any advice on how to sort it,thanks.

Thanks .Have tried that.Wheels are free after brakes have cooled down.Suspected Master cylinder and have just been quoted £190 for a new one.No repair kits from dealers apparently.

Try Lighthouse Jeeps (info in supplier section).

They do caliper re-build kits  :icon_winkle:

Indeed it's a easy fix - rebuild your front brake caliper.

its an easy job once you have done one, start here and yes lighthouse stock the repair kits

just make sure everything is clean when it goes back and make sure that that piston is free to move before fitting any seals, oh and lubricate everything with brake fluis as it goes in

good luck  :greggmo:

very slim chance of it being the master cylinder, get the full caliper rebuild kit from lighthouse, (piston and seals). i did the right hand side one last year but now i need to do the left when time permits (get off my backside is more realistic)

change calipers out and new pads, had same problem with my cherokee, also fit composit discs as i think they dont tend to warp as much, its an easy sunday afternoon job or £60 to 80 total for the whole job, to a mechanic approx an hour max per side if that.

i had the same problem on my 1995 4.0 xj .both front brakes would bind on when crawling along in traffic but free off when cooled down , went down the usual route of suspecting the calipers, but for both to bind at the same time was too much of a coincidence. the next time it did it i released the fluid pressure by loosening the bleed nipples hay presto problem gone . the only item on the braking system that can hold the pressure is the master cylinder which i change and the problem went . turned out to be dirt in the master cylinder which i suspect you shifted after bleeding your brakes.
