is the 4.0 known for water pump failure where the internal impelor fails internally with no leaks or signs of a problem apart from overheating under load [towing]
-
Hi V8
I had a 95 cherokee xj that did that .. when I got it out all that was left was the spindle. The impeller had totally gone.
Had to take most of the front off to do it also .

The pump on my old YJ corroded from the inside out. When the impeller disintegrated it punched a half inch hole in the housing. In roadworks. In evening rush hour. In the centre of Geneva....... :icon_redface:
-
I am sure I have seen a good few stories of impellers corroding excessively on the old 4.0
-
had the impellar grind it's way out on the housing, no play or side movement in the unit either, so work that one out
-
long shot but anyone know off hand if the 4.0 and 2.5 water pumps are the same ?
-
the 2.5 diesel is different but then you know that already LOL
petrol sorry cant remember at this point
-
I don't beleive they are, there is one sitting on the 4.0 outside the house I am going to have to change to fit into the yj if its any use to ya.
-
Water pump is the same for petrol 2.5 and 4.0 engines. Just cross referenced the part number for the one I fitted last weekend. No sign of impeller wear or bearing play on the old one, so it must have just been the seal.
-
The 4.0 XJ water pump is different to the 2.5.
-
phew thanks mike any chance of a heads up on the right one ? 92 xj
-
ok if the one on the engine outside ain't good enough for ya :wave-fingersmiely: :lol_hitting:
