ok ive read most of the threads on the dervs, but due to the petrol prices, im gonna have too look for a derv, and with my tiny budget that means a 2.5 td, can you get away with a coolant change and k-seal and expect it to last???

i see, well im currently out in germany and get tax free fuel, so i can happily afford to run my e30, and scooby that does 9mpg on the commute, so i could happily run a 4.0 but soon im returning back to the uk so gota be a bit sensible with fuel costs. on average how many miles are you all getting to a tank on the petrol, cherrys and grands please

If you budget for 20mpg, you won't be too disappointed :003:

4ltr as Mike says 20mpg if you go diesel then a little more but what you save in fuel costs you pay out in engine repair for when it fails.
4ltr petrol with lpg is the better choice

might have to look at a 4.0 then and just get lpg done when i return to uk, as petrol tax free is a lot cheaper than lpg over lol

I am the owner of a 2.5 diesal cherokee , i have done many miles all over Poland and Ukraine in my oil burner....
Taking it easy i can get almost 500 miles out of a tankfull... i had the problem with the leaking heads , cured by putting in the steal seal...
I love my diesal cherokee , so in all honesty i have to say...don,t buy one...get a petrol cherokee , or some other make with a diesal in it...
VM diesals are pants...

I've got a 2.8 crd Cherokee thats been nothing but problems since I bought it last August. Im now trying to locate a replacement cylinder head as mine and the first replacement I got have both got porous ports. I only average about 23.5mpg so the extra few pence per litre don't make it worth while.

Ive had my 2.7 wj since Aug 2009 and have covered about 25k (miles). I easily average out at 30mpg per tank full. Not difficult at all , more if I drive like a frightened nun but easily down to single figures "playing"
Ive had to replace shockers all round, rear springs, brake discs and pads all round . Parts are not expensive (under £450 for the replacement bits), plus routine servicing.
Tyres were a hit but haggling plus quality tyres brought a full set of wranglers in @ £550
Items I consider not fair wear and tear are a front diff oil seal (£20 pus oil), a front brake pipe (dealer only but next day for £42) and the ubiquitous injector seals (ebay £20 something for set of 5 with bolts plus ceramic grease to the door)
All in all I reckon thats a cheap car to run considering the use i get out of it. It certainly was to buy.
Maybe my experiences with this oil burner is the exception rather than the rule but on the basis of my experiences Id recomend them without reservation :flag:
I know the OP said 2.5 but maybe beg steal or borrow to get to 2.7 money ???????????????????????????

oh neraly forgot, add a tenner to al of that for cleaning materials trying to get the bloody thing "after winter" clean over the past couple of weeks :icon_winkle:

i see your point, and really i should sell one of my current cars, but im planning on keeping them, the impreza is the fun car, the e30 is my daily, and a jeep as a family car :)

I've had my 2.5td about 6 months now and had a few problems, new clutch and release bearing which failed,heater core and fan belt idler pulley. probably mostly due to age being a 1998.
Sounds like a tractor but has enough power for what I want, can get about 27mpg average to a tank with mixed careful driving.
Difficult one now as petrol is cheaper to start with to buy per litre than derv.

I've had my 2.7 WJ since March 2007 and have covered about 50k (miles). I easily average out at 26 mpg around town and 31 mpg long haul

so i want a 4.0 grand, but one thing thats really bugging me is that if i got a tdi discovery (which im also considering) id prolly never have to pay for a part again, and thats start to appeal to me, altho i 100% prefer the grand more lol,

sorry should have explained! im in the army and work with L/R wolfs all day long, wich are basically disco 200tdi's with a defender body thats why i need never pay for another part lol

4.0 with sequential lpg would seem the smart move.
Not very exotic but its earned the name Anvil for good reasons :greggmo:

You do get 30mpg out of the diesel, before you start modding it - got to say I ain't seen 20mpg out of the 4.0L with same driving style........
