How do you adjust the handbrake on a jeep Cherokee sport 2.5 cdr 2002? thanks
-
Dunno about cables and stuff but one way is :
lift up the back end, pry rubbery thinghy out of bottom inside of wheel hub, have flashlight ready and flat screwdriver.
It will be a bit fiddely and you might need some WD40 to loosen it up a bit.
Now the tricky bit ....do you turn handbrake pads adjuster gizmo clockwise or anti clockwise :017:
...do same on other wheel.....re-insert rubbery thinghy.
Job done ! :icon_winkle:
Pulled some pics off the web to give you an idea. These are from other cars with the wheel and hub off but should not be
necessary on the KJ because you go in from the back through the slot.

there is also a strange thing rubbing on that knurled wheel that looks like a blade.........
Some people have thrown that away....... but persevere and leave it cos its a self adjuster.......
Every time you shoot backwards and apply the brake the blade is meant to touch the knurled wheel and tighten the (adjust the) brakes up a click or knurl ........
Can't say I ever found them to be better than whats suggested above but that's what they are :jpshakehead: :icon_twisted:
And as far as direction is concerned..... Put screwdriver in and direction of handle should be upwards to adjust ie blade on top of knurled wheel....
Jack up and spin wheel whilst doing it and when wheel slows against drums your there........ If it dont slow some one put adjusters in ass about face....... no biggy they'll still work.... Just adjust t'other way........
Repeat every time you go off road...... Is it me or do drums stay adjusted for only the first 20 mins of an offroad site?
Mud makes a great grinding paste and likes to wear down your nice new brake shoes :icon_twisted: :jump_125:

Jeep handbrakes are an optional extra
once adjusted normally work for a couple of days, usually around MOT date :icon_winkle:

Never have trouble with mine, must be lucky I guess!

do you get in the mud ?
-
Not too much of that around here ;)

I thought the handbrake lever was there just to make a pretty red light come on in the instument panel....
I wasn,t aware it was connected to the brakes....????

the ratchet thingy is to stop the mechanism unwinding, self adjustng brakes really are a designers dream.
cherokee handbrake that actually holds the jeep on a hill..........not a chance. Designed for the uk market to only work effectively once a year.
i'd be wary about sprayiny wd40 into an enclosed brake drum cavity to lubricate the adjuster.
but there again jeep maight have fixed the crap handbrake by 2002
