Title: Powertrax no slip locker
Post by: Bagofsand on May 26, 2011, 06:05:22 AM
Trying to figure out what would be best to install. Any advice appreciated.

TJ 4.0 Auto with rear LSD 31 inch mud and 3.07 gears. wont be going bigger on tyres as re gear costs out weigh vehicle use.

1 Fit locker in front axle. Would this be advisable?
2 Replace lsd with locker in rear. LSD is working.
3 Fit lockers front and rear. Bit more than i really want to spend

Having had a search the Richmond powertrax no slip seems to be the best budget locker around or have imissed something?

What are the pro's and con's of each option? have had a good search around and still not sure.

but fit one in the front and you may just have to drive in 2wd on roads - but worth it

Thanks for the responses. I take it that having just the front locked off road is ok? And i presume that as i stay in two wheel drive on road i shouldnt have any problems with the steering? Will it work ok in 4wd in the snow on the road obviously at reduced speed?

Bubba or should i say Mr Bubba, never good at etiquitette. Wheres the best (cheapest) place to source the lockers? and are they as straight forward to install as the american ads say?

Thanks again

Just fitted Aussie locker to my front axle, D30 on an XJ. 2 wheel drive on tarmac is fine, steering a bit heavier, simple to fit, awesome off-road. :icon_super:

You probably be OK on a TJ cos front prop has carden double whatsit on prop...........

But locker or no slip on front will spin both driveshafts in 2wd and obviously the prop and that will spin front output on transfercase and that in turn will have the 231 chain spinning without load on it..............

Might not be a problem..............but my 2 cents worth......

My YJ had powertrax lockright on front Dana 30........... awesome off road.......... BUT broke the weaker YJ UJs quite easily....and then with Crown TJ shafts and UJs broke them as well not as easily but still broke.

Vibrations from everything spinning mullared pinion bearing which got wobbly....... fragged the propshaft and spun up the transfer case and then I had to replace the chain and bits (you could see where the chain had spun against the inside of the case......
How did I fix it all..... spendy spendy
Warn freewheeling hub kit........
Warn chrome moly shafts and superior UJs
new prop.
Then tight turns in mud in 4 x4  were not easy so went to an ARB.... in front.

So in summary.......... Free wheeling hubs cheap and easy on CJs avoids all spinning of stuff in 2wd so No slip or Lockright good

ON YJ deffo, maybe TJ as well, ...ARB is spendy but tis all you'll need to do ........... what I did was because I refused to spend on overpriced Ozzy stuff (ARB) and the over 8 years realized this would have been the cheaper route :jpshakehead: My Warn FWH kit was more than an ARB...... :icon_sad: and they don't do em anymore some one else has stepped into the crease..can't remember who at the moment.....

So this is just a heads up as to what can happen........... Just so you can save some money...........

Like I didn't.............. no regrets tho.      Learnt a lot :icon_twisted:

I've just spent 4 days offroading with a TJ with 35" Simex fitted to standard diffs, no lockers, manual box and he pissed everything thrown at him. It's a trailer queen and is probably horrible to drive above 30 mph but goes to show you don't need to follow the recommended route of lockers, regear....

If it was me, i'd probably fit a no-slip or similar lcker in the fornt axle and just take it out if I didn't like how it felt offroad or on - it's a fairly straightforward install.

fitting to the rear is easy even for retards  the front is easy but a bit more time consuming and a bit more care needed and more dismantling

OK, here's the way we went with our 98 auto TJ.

Its got a 2" lift & running 31's & thats where its stopping becuase its still used on the road / lannning & in the winter when the weather gets interesting. Also has to be dog friendly in the back so no 33's.

As with any 4x4, ground clearance is as much a limiting factor as lockers etc.

Like yours, the almost complete absense of engine breaking on decents with the larger tyres & auto box combo needed to be sorted. Considered lockers of any & all descriptions but once you go that way you then start moving the weak points stressing UJ's & half shafts etc.

We went for true trac limited slips in both ends & re-geared to 4.10. All stuff from Randys off road in USA & fitted by Bubba aka MJS.

Far more control (but will never be that of a manual box) downhill & plenty more grip especially at the front but still usable on the road. Limiting factor now is my cojones & the perenial ground clearance.

Its upto you to decide how you use your TJ & what you want to get from it, good luck whatever you decide  :icon_winkle:

bagofsand do you have a winch fitted ?. if your factory lsd in the tail is good maybe look at an lsd for the front. much better for a daily drive and better road manners. if you have the cash go for front and rear arb air lockers cos they are on or off at the flick of a switch. if you want somethin in the tail go powertrax or if you have the dosh detroit but be ready to learn to drive again and also pick up the old ladies who fall over when the tail of your jeep makes a noise resembling a shot gun goin off. in short unless you do lots of off roadin or want to go more extreme dont bother. tj's with the right lift and the right boots on are fairly hard to stop. just my thoughts.
