Wife was driving the XJ today and noticed it's making a knocking noise from the rear.
Climbed in the back while she drove and it seems to sound louder closer I put my ear to each of the rear wheels - not one or the other. Quite a regular thunk thunk thunk sound. Seems more pronounced the slower you go. It's barely audible up front.
Any quick diagnosis before I take it somewhere - typical! I make plans for buying a few mods and something interesting happens.

Is it worse pulling away from roundabouts or around corners? LSD? Sounds like a horse kicking it's way out? D35 clutchplates methinks.....
-
Could also be a need for LSD additive to stop the chatter, might be a cheaper option first off.
Cheers
Nick

Don't let her drive it any more.

LOL Mike. I thought that too. Whenever my cars kick up, she always seems to be driving.
Didn't notice it worse cornering - although its harder to hear it when on the gas. When driving around for a while and everything is hot there as always been a faint dull thud when moving off. It's always done it. I did hope it might be something as innocent as a stone in the tyres but no such luck. Also the fact that it sounds like it's coming from both wheels - would that indicate some diff issue? It was quite warm when the wife came home last night after about 7 mile journey.
If I take it to a garage are they going to be able to work out what it is quickly? i.e. an easy spot for a competent mechanic.
Not just replace part after part until it stops knocking?

Let the kids out of the boot or feed the Trunk Monkey!
Sorry, just couldn't resist.

:icon_redface:
I'm such an arse! I took the rear wheels off a week or so ago to fit some mudflaps and I always give each nut two cracks. Took the Jeep to a client who owns a garage and ask him to take it round the block for a listen. First thing he did was check the nuts and they were very loose. Only one was tight.
Very red faced! Still, at least it's nothing more serious than ametuer hour with the spanners.
