got asked today if a xj 2.5td gearbox will fit a 2.5 tj, was there a difference in the overall gearing and will it phisicaly fit, i presumed yes but could do with a second opinion.

purdy sure twill fit but the raitio well deffo not be the same for an oiler unless they is fittin the oiler and box to a tj mike will know the ratio diference

cheers bubba, i thought it was the same bolt patern but not sure about the ratios whether they would be better or worse as its sat on 31's. its either going to return the gearing or make it scream like a banshee

Can find data for every tranny except for XJ diesel!

I know the diesel AX15 and 3500 are different part nos to the petrol versions, I would guess the spacing between the lower ratios may be a tad shorter, 4th will be 1:1 as usual any other noticable difference will be in 5th and reverse. Jeep tend to alter the overall gearing more with their axle ratios than anything else so I reckon it wouldn't be too bad.
It should bolt straight on, but you need to check the size of the clutch spline and pilot bearing as the AX15 is a more substantial transmission so could be bigger in these respects.

I have a 2.5 TJ box taking up good room in my shop right now. Do you want to bid me for it ?

Joking aside, if you deal with the shipping, its a good swap for me.
