for the first time in weeks everything has come together, desire and opportunity at the same time is a real rarity these days but managed a start on the 360, few missing bolts replaced (sump pan) and some bodged bits removed (studding with a nylock welded on the end holding on the water pump) then out with the wire brushes and paint.
[attachment=1]
the puppy is starting to look like the old man he is too :icon_sad:
-
bit shiny for black but u learning :greggmo:
cant believe the sweetest runnin 360 i have heard still had bodges :jpshakehead:

bit more cleaning and painting today in-between other jobs
[attachment=1]
also last of the bits for the ZJ diff rebuild delivered today, at least I hope so, for those that have done the job before, is there anything missing?
[attachment=2]
-
aint done an axle rebuild yet mate, but dont you need dti and stuff to set it up. looks like you have the paste to see how the gears are meshing :greggmo:
-
got a DTI and mag base, was more thinking of parts I missed or special tools, wont be able to start till Friday and have to be rolling by Monday (only got use of the workshop for the weekend) so gotta have it all here or I'm screwed
-
:greggmo: Kevs done a couple so will let you know
-
have fun use ya shim stack thats aleady there as a start point you will need to check mesh patern cant se inch lb torque rench to measure preload rolling resistance
o and mind ya fingers getting the plates and beval washer enjoy :icon_super:
-
Kev, keep your phone on please on Saturday m8 :icon_biggrin:
-
set up a web cam so we can all watch?
-
:imwitstupid:

christ on a bike dont we have enuff filth on the web without NB gettin all oily :078: the pink massive will be stalkin him bad :hysterical:
-
for those that have done the job before, is there anything missing?
A 10 tonne press and a bearing separator :098:
-
he just gonna sit on it
-
got a separator and 16t press, anything else?
-
pic of separator ?
-
its 4" clamp type, 2 half moons with 2 draw bolts same one I used on the CJ axle
-
at last found some core plugs at a reasonable price, some places wanted almost a fiver each, got the 6 block side for a tenner in the end and will order the rear block plug when I get the block of the stand to measure it, cylinder head plugs are fine so will leave them as is.
-
oh FFS Bruce, we used to make core plugs by the 100,000's.
Still got some sizes in stock, let me know what dia your after, metric or imperial & i'll see if we have anything.
Text / PM when you know :icon_winkle:
-
sods law aint it, fitted the block core plugs, finished painting the block and flipped the engine to clean the heads and inlet manifold ready to paint and seems I missed one of the head plugs has a hole right in the middle filled with crud, so Gaz if you have a supply a full 360 set is
10 x 1-1/2"
4 x 1"
1 x 2-1/8" (some castings also have an extra 1-1/2" plug behind the flywheel so I have read)
got the plugs for this block now but I could do with a spare set for when I rebuild the other 360 :icon_winkle:
-
bout time ya lazy bastard
-
:imwitstupid: :003:
-
Will have a look Monday Bruce :icon_winkle:
-
Bruce, we still do 1" & 1.1/2" actual size 1.009" & 1.509" for interfereance fit.
Will put some aside next time we make some ;)
Let me know if you get desperate :greggmo:
-
Thank mate, no rush now but good for the rebuild when take old engine out,
OCD has been kicking in today :003:
[attachment=1]
-
bit more progress, took front bodywork off Saturday, and removed all the bits that will be needed for the replacement V8 today, full bolt set cleared customs yesterday so can collect from depot monday and start the final assembly this week, if weather holds may even get to do swap this month :greggmo:
body off
[attachment=1]
block painted
[attachment=2]
-
Nice one! Lookin very bling, just need the chrome rockers now :greggmo:
-
HUBBA HUBBA!!!
-
Nice..very nice..... you wont have a prob with the timing then :icon_biggrin: :icon_twisted:
-
Nice !! :icon_super:
What paint have you used for the silver & blue ?
-
nothing too special, heat resisting aluminium paint for the silver and engine lacquer for the blue and black all made by carplan and from local car spares shop about a fiver a tin
-
sorry to be bit of a spoilsport, it looks good now but will be covered in mud soon :steeringwheel:
-
very true but there are a few reasons for doing it this way,
1 it means I clean and inspect every part as it is used
2 when first run any fluid leaks will be readily visible
3 makes the assembly and fitment a much easier job
but the most important reason.. I enjoy doing it :003: saying that can't wait to get it dirty
-
starting to get pretty now, bolts have arrived and while not a 100% full set the few that are missing are easy to identify, one small set back the thermostat housing I ordered is wrong, its about 1/4" too narrow on the bolt holes (probably an oldsmobile unit as they almost the same) so still on the look out for replacement
[attachment=1]
[attachment=2]
-
lots more cleaning and painting again today, and a few more bits fitted
[attachment=1]
if anyone else is rebuilding a 304/360/401 and is interested i have kept a record of bolt sizes by component for the V8, will work out a lot cheaper to buy from local suppler for the other 360 than the £70 for the 90% set I got from the states
-
you headin to Bubbas any time soon? Shall i leave the rocker covers there?
-
he will be up sat i think
-
bit of a set back today, it seems there are different water pumps for the V8, the problem is with the one fitted on the rebuilt engine does not allow the fitment of the alternator brackets I have
[attachment=1][attachment=2]
before I think about spacers or making a new bracket, is there a standard bracket available to fit?
-
I remember my bro inlaw having the same problem, He used a spacer made from a piece of round bar and drilled through the middle.
-
think your right, going to space with washers for now, and after xmas when I have the lath back in my workshop I'll make some proper spacers.
anyway needed some feel-good so bolted on some shiny bits :greggmo:
[attachment=1]
-
cool, so u dont need rocker covers then :greggmo:
mate, that engine is an obscenity - shiny and blinged beyond belief :hysterical:
-
yea, they are split around the bolt holes and wont seal, just on there to keep it clean till I get the others
-
Nosebolt 1 - 0 special tool
took the press fit pulley off the power steering pump to clean and paint it, was well chuffed as did it without the "special tool" only to find you need the special tool to refit the bloody pulley, :icon_redface: anyway finally worked out the special tool just screws into the pump shaft and uses the tread to wind the pulley back on, so extended the thread on a bolt, turned a small ally push flange and a couple of spanners and its back on.
only a small thing but been staring at it for days so in my head its a big victory :icon_super:
-
Too late mate but well done............... I've got the special tool cos I was doing three when I was messing with the spendy pump from PSC...... made life so easy........
So if anyone needs a borrow in the future............ postal costs only............... :icon_twisted: :icon_biggrin:
-
stuck at home today while Tan uses the GC, her bike is haveing some new pipes built, anyway did a bit more, took the carb off the old engine and gave it a clean, was only rebuilt 200 miles ago, and converted the auto choke to manual.
[attachment=1]
only hold up at the moment is the alternator brackets, the set I have are for a non AC but this engine had AC, if I cant get the right set then looks like I'm making some, if I do then recon I will relocate the alternator a bit higher, same as the PSP, seen some nice billet kits I may copy but may have to be in steel, will see whats available for free :003:
-
done the last trial assembly today before rip down ready to fit. just a few small jobs left
to buy:
VHT for exhausts
plug leads
gasket paper
to do:
make relocation bracket for alternator
prep and paint rocker covers, headers & thermostat housing
make 4 BSP planking plugs for inlet manifold
[attachment=1][attachment=2][attachment=3][attachment=4]
-
fuck me it looks like a liquorice allsort :hysterical:
:greggmo: though :greggmo:
:003:
-
what size BSP blanking plugs are you after and how many ?
-
1/8 and 3/8 but have some nickel plated ones ordered now, thanks for the offer,
but useful for anyone to know who's removing all the superfluous vacuum feeds of a V8
-
done all the metal work mods to the XJ column today and its now fitted, most electrics are plug and play, got to swap wiper motor to a 4 wire type and I can then use the column wiper switch, also reroute the dip switch wires and connect to column controls. only switch I cant use is the cruise control
[attachment=1]
next is to make a hybrid link shaft, half CJ, half XJ
[attachment=2]
also had the fancy blanking pugs arrive and they are now fitted, no more messy unused rubber pipes on the 360 now
[attachment=3]
-
Well done Bruce, mine is still sitting in the body tub waiting for me to fit it. I'm still buggering about with fitting the new PAS box.
[attachment=1]
-
just finished the link shaft, top end is XJ and keeps its impact compression slide and stronger UJ, bottom is CJ with the booted sliding UJ, so get best of both :003:
join was easy, cut the XJ as long as possible, and cut the CJ on the thicker tube at the end of the flats, use the oxy torch to melt the nylon lock and hammer out the flat sided bar, clean every thing up and fit the 2 halves and mark where the XJ end is on the CJ shaft (need to keep the XJ shaft long so the impact slide works) trim the CJ shaft and use the flat sided tube off cut from the CJ to sleeve the joint.
point the magic TIG at it and splash of paint and you have steering again :icon_super:
[attachment=1]
close up of joint
[attachment=2]
-
Nice one mate.............. good feeling doing some'at like that knowing that the alternative is Flaming River or whoever and $6-700 :icon_super:
Extended mine for the 1 Ton and then.................shortened it cos I was going full hydro............ :jpshakehead: :hysterical: Still cost nowt tho :icon_biggrin:
-
tis always good when you do it yourself, at least then you appreciate how overkill you want to make it.
-
got the engine out today, mounts, flywheel and clutch swapped over
[attachment=1]
[attachment=2]
all jet-washed ready to paint the bulkhead, to much of a rush last time so didn't get done
[attachment=3]
[attachment=4]
tomorrow its paint bulkhead, fit gearbox to block and refit into car
-
good start to the day, needed more smooth hamerite for the bulkhead and it was on sale 50% off :003:
all painted ok, box fitted to block ok and thought i would also fit the trans (normally fit to engine after it in car) all would have been fine it the engine crane was 5" longer :banghead: but the extra weight at the far end has scuppered me for today, that and the light running out. have got a plan for tomorrow involving axle stands, a scaffold pole and a ratchet strap, so fingers crossed
-
and i's in :icon_super: :icon_super:
[attachment=1]
-
Lookin good...... :icon_super:
-
well done dood
-
just plumb it all up and theres the hot rod look
-
yey :ace: cool
its too cool to get grubby
-
another good couple of days, props, starter, clutch mech., power steering pump, carb, dizzy, gear sticks, oil filler tube most hoses and cables fitted, most of the other bits that need doing are now painted and i think I have sussed the new wiper wiring.
weather permitting the wiring loom, battery tray and the earth cables will go on and we may see some life, wont be a full fire up as need new leads to fit the HEI dizzy but should be able to test the rest.
still to do is draw up and get machined from some alloy billet a new hi line alternator mount, as a bonus the machine shop needs a new workshop sign so will be able to do a trade off :003:
-
another good day :003:
made the alternator brackets and really happy with it
[attachment=1]
all electrics now above the rocker covers
[attachment=2]
all the under side buttoned up, and the column controls are 90% done, may even get the exhausts and some body on tomorrow :003:
-
lost a few days on the CJ, got to take the work when its about, anyway its full of oil, headers are on, it's been turned over on the battery to get the oil pressure up a bit and circulating, static timing been set as best I can, fuel all plumbed in just waiting for new HT leads and one v belt (now need a 1100 as I have moved the alternator and the 1060 don't fit) and we could see some life :icon_super:
will be nice to get it drivable then I can use the workshop across the road again to get the last of the winter upgrades done, new rear leafs, rear locker and new longer front shock mounts, all here waiting to go on..
-
spent most of today trying to sort out why the break light wouldn't go out, all down to the column change slightly different position for the main ignition plug caused it to just push against the break peddle enough to activate the break lights but not enough to take up all the free play. just too about 2mm off the edge of the peddle near the hinge and all sorted. only took 3 hours to work out what to do and get it done :banghead:
still another step closer :003:
-
it saw life today, refitted the old motorcraft dizzy and a bit of fresh petrol and we had life, didn't run for too long as no water in it yet and yet to see any oil pressure but that could just be the mechanical gauge needing bleeding.
all in all happy, does sound nice on just the headers but not sure the neighbours agree :icon_twisted:
-
Thats good news NB,wont be long before being back on the circuit again i hope
-
small set back today, one minute it will starts on the key next its like it has a flat battery, recon its either the starter or cables, battery tested ok and was same on jump pack, so dug out the spare starter and stripped and cleaned it and will be getting some thicker cables asap
-
Sounds exactly like when battery connections are bad
-
indeed
-
change of starter motor has made a hell of a difference, still getting some 16mm feed and earth leads made tomorrow, only gotta pay for fittings so can't pass it up
