Careful!!!! Africa is kind of fooooked up right now for traveling - had a bad experience in The Gambia last year - many other travelers I spoke with had a bad experience with corruption.

the news speaks for itself, somalia and the west coast militia are not reknowned for their friendliness. Would it be worth reconsidering a different challenge?

hey guys nice to see all comments. first of all im from south africa been in uk for 10 years and have decide to hit road back. i have been brought up around all sorts of 4x4 mainly land rovers range rovers land cruisers ext and to be honest all 4x4s have pros and cons. this trip has been dream of mine ever since i can remember. the jeep is great car nice and comfy and ofers me wat i want. yes there is some mods and things that need changing but any vehicle u take on big trip. so i no wich route im taking i no wat i need the only thing is up grading the axles i can change them and put stronger axles on its just looking for axles tha will bolt direct in.

Nothing will bolt straight in..........but if yo can cut the crap off the doner axles then after market sources in the us can supply all the bits you need to weld on your axles for spring location dampers and 3/4 link location.........

Been a few Jeeps with Nissan Patrol axles...... TJ only so far........... they come with strength and lockers........ no reason they can't be made to fit :icon_twisted: Plasma cutter disc cutter and 'metal glue' :icon_super:

Landcruiser 80 series axles been done as well - neither are easy but a massive upgrade in strength.

Maybe go with TJ Dana 44 rear and XJ high pinion D30 front. On stock or 31" tyres I think you'd have trouble breaking them and they might be almost bolt -in.

I'd definitely strip loads of electrics out, learn how to change all the sensors and carry spares, probably a diagnostic software kit / scanner and have deep pockets for the fuel needed.

Wouldn't be my first choice of vehicle but I understand wanting to do something people say is stupid - it's nice to be about give the finger at times  :098:

I would have said a manual box would have been much better for this kind of trip, far less likely to give trouble and even if it did you can normally still drive. Dust, wear and tear and vibration are going to be your biggest worries, so anything the is susceptible to this would need to be carried as spares and renewed before commencement. UJ's would need to be carried in multiples. I would learn how to change a tyre yourself and carry the equipment needed to do so, I would also run inner tubes in the tyres as they are less likely to fail. A good workshop manual would be a must and also a very good toolkit with every type of spanner and torx socket required for that vehicle. I would even look at getting a 12v welder, and possibly a good 12v invertor to 220v and carry the likes of a grinder/cut off saw/ drill. Or if you are really good look at installing an onboard air supply (AC compressor) and use air tools. I could go on for hours but I think you get my drift.

I don't think that there is enough money to convince me to drive through Africa but since you are from SA you understand the continent far better than we do. Good luck with the trip..

Now if we were talking Siberia, that would be a real hoot

The only vehicle I would contemplate this type of journey in would be a Unimog.
