Piccies here.....
http://http://www.photobox.co.uk/album/2395317
This is the rear UJ / CV at the diff end of the driveshaft (Rear Diff)... looks like the top "Cup" has split and there's something screwy at the bottom too :(
Guess I know what was causing the vibes now
-
You just need a new UJ, it'll come with all you need (it's the bearing cap that's split - a new uj will come complete with four new caps).
Easy to change you'll just need to remove the prop shaft cos it's easier to do on a bench!
Might aswell change both ends whilst you're at it - expect to pay about £20 an end.
-
yep, the uj's buggered
I'm with Ric, remove the rear prop and do both ends!
-
Excellent.... £20 an end sounds damn good to me....
Ta muchly....

just so you remember the new bolts also.........

...good call IOM

yup uj fooked, chuck greasable ones in,if you grease em regular they will last better than non greasable ones.
-
Lighthouse for greasable ones ??
or 4wd / quadratech????
-
the import option is cheaper ed, just means you gotta wait for em. its always worth keepin a few spare prop and front shaft uj,s cos they do go from time to time.
-
Anyone any good with the 4wd site?
Found this http://http://www.4wd.com/newsite/shop/productdetail.asp?pid=153X&model=tj&cat=14&kid=392&catid=392&mid=n but no idea if that's the right ones....
Also, anyone got a few tips on the removal and replacement.... From the book it looks like removing the prop is just undoing the rear end (Strap bolts) and releaseing the dust cover from the tranny case end (Marking it first) before you pull it off. I take it you can use cable ties when you put this back on ????
But then it starts talking about needing a press.... now are we talking a g-clamp and a bit or force, or do you really need a press / vice (of which I own neither!) especially as it seems that the new ones "Push in" ???
So, I need a shopping list and an idiot guide........ Please :)

EvilEd
as Greggmo has said get a greasable one. Depending on how stuck it is you can normally use a big bench vice to press the UJ out, just use a suitable size socket to help press the end caps through.

I'm struggling to find anything here..... just going to look at quadratech...
I found the strap bolts on 4wd... :)
-
Bloody F'ing Quadratec only list the non greasable one too :(

-
Just looked on Quadratec and they had some meaty looking greasable ones, but pricey!

Okay, I think I am getting somewhere...
Am I looking for a Spicer 5-153x or 1310 u joint rather than one for a TJ ?????
-
Scratch that..... looks like I need a 297X joint....
I need help !!!!!
-
Ed,
If it helps,
I have a 153x greasable, and a 760x non-greasable uj.
If you need one quickly you can use what you need and just give me a replacement back when you get your order through!
-
Thanks, that's a really nice offer....
Fortunately, I'm in no rush as I have the nutty car as transport, just want to make sure I order the right bits coz I'll get shit from the girly if I get the wrong ones.... :)
Mad4wd seem to do the exact bits I want for $10 for the 153x and $20 for the 297x / 760x one.... dunno if they ship to the UK, but failing that, I'll get them land shipped to our US office and call in a favour...
http://http://www.mad4wd.com/tek9.asp?pg=products&grp=227
Do I need to order these boot clips (is it advisable) or will a couple of good quality cable ties or jubilee clips do the job nicely??
-
Are these the same as an xj prop? If so I got mine from a Land*****r parts shop, same part number, greaseable, dirt cheap.

(2A) Spicer® Axle Shaft Universal Joint, Wrangler, 1995-03; XJ Cherokee, 1995-00; Grand Cherokee, 1995-98 (297X)
-
Have you tried http://http://www.jeep4x4center.com ?
They're very good, I use 'em all the time. Shipping to UK is no problem.
Ric.
-
XJ ones are definitely the same as Landy ones (I've had both, remember), and you can get the Landy ones for about a fiver each
. Might be worth checking if they fit the TJ, could be a real cheap fix (and useful longer term for other members!).
-
Any idea what the numbers are for the Landy ones as they don;t seem to cross reference....
Won't the Landy ones break
-
-
I'll see if I can get the part numbers Ed. And no, they won't brake (thats a "Jeep Thing"! LOL).
-
Cheers
(It had to be said)

Right,
Monday, Tried MountainJacks and "Jeep4x4Centre", MJs never got back to me despite chasing them :( Spoke to chap at Jeep4x4, he got me to email him with what I was after... never heard from him either.....
Bit the bullet on Tuesday and went to my local Lardy place.... No joy there... And ordered them from Lighthouse (~£24 each)
Arrived yesters to banged them in last night (well, pushed them in) The One at the diff end had two pins that were ~ 40% smaller than the other two pins and distinctly oval in appearance
I think if I had floored it, then it may and said goodbye... The cups were pretty worn too... Tis fun trying to get those clips back in the second side ain't it :) Only confession is that I ended up down my mechanics with the shaft to use his vice as with the shaft and two sockets, I needed something fairly large.... but I did the work myself....
I finally have smooth pullaway again.....
