Title: Steering/suspension parts advice please!
Post by: JAY1 on November 10, 2011, 07:00:53 PM
Hi guys,

I've just finished changing my front and rear diff fluid and my tc fluid too. Very rewarding stuff!

I now have the urge to fix more stuff on my WJ and seem to have 'loose' steering. I often have to correct the steering from left to right to keep the jeep in a straight line. The 'looseness' can be exaggerated by braking when the jeep will pull in it's own direction at times, almost like one of the wheels has a bit of a mind of its own. I have new calipers on the front so can eliminate that being the issue.

Could the tie rods be causing this? The rubber mounts look very old and tired and don't seem like they could be of any use anymore!

Any help tightening up the steering would be much appreciated as I'm a novice when it comes to this part of my car!

Many thanks
Jay

track rod ends & both ends of the drag link from the steering box, think it cost me about £80 odd in parts to swap all 4 ends

the track rod ends from lighthouse will be more likely made by crown, the ends themselves are as good as O.E but the rubber boots/cover are crap and will split alot quicker than the factory fiited type. If your old track rod boots are intact take them off and fit them instead.

crown track rod end boots last from 1 week upwards

I'm a novice when it comes to these parts....so if the boots wear, do i just need to replace the boots on my tie rod ends? Or does the whole tie rod need to be replaced? Are the boots expensive?

if so, what makes are suggested?

Thanks
Jay

from my experience the track rod ends normally fail after a period of time but with crown parts the rubber cover (boot) that hold the grease in place fails quickly due to the rubber being of a harder composition. The jeep O.E rubber covers are slightly softer and last longer. These can be bought from the stealership but for what they are they aren't cheap. So keep the intact old ones and swap them over when fitting new bandit rod ends.

It will be the panhard rod bushings.

x2 with the panhard rod, mine was doing the same and turned out to be the bolt on the axle end being loose.
think its done up to 65-70 lbs/ft

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll replace the panhard bushes too. If I can get some original mopar tie rods for my wj for 45 each is that a good price? Anyone know what the dealer charges?

Thanks jay

Fyi they are between 55 and 63 at the dealer. Not too bad given some of the prices I have been quoted! Over 100 from euros!
