Title: XJ steering

anyone knows if there is a spring or something that goes on the ally ball thing in the photo?

just it seems to need pushing up into the cowl to get the key to turn enough to be removed

That's the transmission interlock, to stop the key being removed unless you're in Park. Cable tie it in position.
