Title: Dr Mike, please read.....your help needed!!
Post by: Anonymous on January 08, 2006, 04:51:18 PM
Hi Mike,

as you are probably aware, since the turkey hunt I have had gearbox probs with the XJ.....probably due to me being nose down in the lagoon for quite a while??

when she gets very hot (tearing up the motorway or a long trip) she dumps her ATF.......running round town/short trips, no problems.......

it seems to be coming out thro the front seal or somewhere in that area cos the oil is all over the bellhousing backwards.....

there does seem to be an ATF cooler integrated into the rad somehow....you would know more than me!! & we cant seem to find where the box breather is.....so cant see if thats blocked or not....

any ideas mate??

cheers in advance!!
Paul

the breather is on top of the bell housing, itsgot a bit of a pigtail on it, you can just about feel it from the o/s of the engine bay

may be a stupid thing but are you sure the fill level stick isnt giving you a bad reading and you are overfilling it?
Maybe worth draining it dry and measuring the correct amount back in (you may have done this already, worth a shot though)

If it was overfilled you'd notice a lot of foaming of the oil on the dipstick too. The cooler is built into the radiator on the XJ, You'll see the pipes near the steering box. Check the pipes to the transmission aren't crushed or kinked, as this could restrict the oil flow and cause a buildup of pressure. Checg that breather isn't full of crap and that the cooler isn't blocked.

IF you get this sorted out Paul let me know as my XJ is doing the same thing! Mine didnt do it untill the oil was topped up, and like yours spits it out and stinks after a long journey.

knowing that i was nose down in the mud, would the rad being full of crud cause this?? as the rad is a little fecked anyway, should the first step be to replace it? pipes dont seem to be kinked or crushed.........

Check the pipes above the front axle, directly above the upper control arm.
the pipes run alongside the block/sump on the O/side

they can get squished, when playing

If the pipes to the cooler have been crushed to,it could be that the oil is not circulating thro the rad and overheating... expands, then finds the easy way out...had a very very similar prob with my Dodge Day Van,after I had fitted a bigger gearbox.running local no probs,do about 30/40 miles and it dumped everything out over the road...the heat could not be dissapated quick enough,in my case I fitted a much larger surface area rad (4 cores) and prob dissapeared instantly, hope that helps matey
