Luckily the XJ died a few yards from the house and broke my back pushing it on to the drive!
Its trying to start and keeps catching a bit but instantly dies. Turns over for a while before the battery starts to give up.
Any early ideas before I call the garage?

Reads like a fuel problem - can you hear the pump churn?
-
Tried again this morning and I can hear the fuel pump priming. Should it only prime once? i.e. turn on ingnition, hear pump, turn on ignition again, don't hear pump as it's primed? (only ask because my last car was like that)
Plugs and dizzy are a couple of years old and less than 10K miles. I think there must be a spark because it does try to fire just doesn't keep going.
Is there a way to read fault codes without a reader?

HMMM perhaps the garage would be the easy option - just a guess this but if you have spark and you have fuel it's possible the cat is blocked??

Do you get the warning lights going thru sequence when you turn ignition on??
Only ask cos this morning my zj barked up for 2-3 seconds 3-4 times in a row only to chuck it each time.
Turned out to be weak batteries in the fob-put some new ones in still the same but noticed driver's seat would move off buttons but not move to memory posn when unlocked.
For some reason it had decided to only unlock other 3 doors and would not connect with drivers door.
Disco'd battery for 5 mins refitted and it's been sweet ever since.
Nearly caused a Basil Fawlty moment at 6.30 this morning, the MOFO.
Might be nowt like your problem but could be worth considering??

T'was the the rotor arm fallen apart and damaged the dizzy at the same time. Replaced and good as new :)
Thanks for the replies chaps! :)
