Title: Will LHD Rad fit RHD TJ
Post by: Pdro on January 12, 2012, 02:58:48 PM
Hi Guys. Anyone know if a wrangler TJ 4L LHD Radiator will fit my 98 RHD Drive 4L tj.

I read that the cut-out was different for the power steering pump but I don't see that when i look at photos.

Also if someone has a spare rad let me know.

Paul.

I think the cut out may be in the shell rather than the rad itself so it may fit but not 100% sure.

It wont fit. I had this problem fitting a 3 core rad to my tj, i had to unbraze the brackets and braze on the old mounts from my old rad. I looked hard at it and it looked the same, only when i offered it up did i see the problem. I even tried to cut the lhd mounts so it would fit but it doesnt work. I was licky that the new rad was all metal rather than metal and plastic otherwise i wouldnt have been able to stick it together...

No, an XJ rad it totally different. Take your old rad to your local radiator place and get them to do a re-core.

I fitted a new one to mine last year, it cost £200 off eBay and they guy said to spend the extra and you won't have any problems. Glad I listened to him as it took 30 MBA to change over.

oops forgot to say, most of the RHD aftermarket ones are made for auto so you got the bottom part used for cooling that. If fitting to a manual you effectively get a smaller rad for your money, i will re-core when i need one  :icon_winkle:

why not just connect up the tranny cooler as a oil cooler for the engine?

err, cos you loose cooling capacity for the water, essential when in low range and crawling  :greggmo:

only if you are stuck or driving like Ms Daisy.... :icon_winkle: (I am pretty sure that if the auto rad can keep  a jeep cool  in the California, it would be able to keep it cool here also remember that oil also cools the engine as much as water does)

I guess this could start a whole new threat on oil versus water! :lol_hitting:

I would see this as a chance to recore with as big a core as possible...... long as you have a thermostat and correct cap there ain't no such thing as too much cooling.....just bigger belt and bigger braces :icon_super:

Just remember a weak point on a TJ rad is the plastic bit at the top so a recore may not be an option

An xj will overheat if crawling around at a slow pace. you realy need to have fully working fan or at least a high speed fan for when the temp goes over the 105 mark.
the auto box is cooled by the engine coolant so the two operate at the same temperature.

question without water how does the engine oil cool ?

your correct there Rob but the engines are two different designs. the vw is designed to allow air to flow around the cylinder heads (except for the rear left where this burns out) and with a small oil to air cooler fitted as well.
the jeep engine is designed for water cooling hence the lack of airflow around the engine and seperate heads. just using oil with no form of heat transfer medium will result in a scrap engine.

On Jeep Club.....

Jeep TJ radiator, only used 2 weeks, bargain!

I am selling what almost amounts to a brand new radiator for a RHD Jeep TJ. I'm told it fits 2.5L as well as 4.0L. My original rad was developing a leak and the Jeep OE one didn't arrive in time before xmas so I fitted this aftermarket one. When the OE one turned up I swapped it over, it's only been on the vehicle for 2 weeks! There's nothing wrong with it, it's just surplus to my needs and was bought to get me out of a jam. It cost me over £220, I am looking for £150+delivery (or buyer collects) from NE London.
