Title: no oil pressure, what have I missed?
Post by: Nosebolt on January 16, 2012, 12:01:24 PM
360 now starts on the key but not getting any oil pressure, recon I have fuked up somewhere but can't work out where, story so far:

engine totally drained during build, block was rotated so all oil was removed
after assembly was filled with correct amount by book-- started but no pressure
next took off oil pump and it was dry so filled filter and housing as much as possible-- started but no pressure
took off feed tube for gauge and run engine nothing came out also rockers are dry

have I missed something?

Is the pick up tube attached properly in the sump ?
Is the oil pump turning with the engine ?

I know an engine builder who would pack the pump with grease when an engine was fresh to help the pump seal and suck the oil up into it.Never done it myself. My initial thoughts would be there may be an vacuum  leak on the pump pickup

pick up was torqued but not removed during prep, have also now checked the pressure relief valve, was stiff but not stuck, ok now. think I will try the grease packing as it would make sense for a dry build

I have always done this after a rebuilt zetec I didn't do it on spun the main bearings

When I did my timing chain on my 360 I replaced the oil pump at the same time. When it was all going back together I filled the oil pump housing with vaseline (this helps with priming) and before I put the distributor back I primed the pump using a drill and a long bit through the hole in the timing cover where the dissy goes. I took the rocker covers off so I could see when the oil was primed. The oil pressure came up straight away.
Also check that nothing has happend to your distributor drive gear, as the dissy also drives the oil pump.
Hope that makes sense

it was a priming issue, packed it with grease and was at pressure within 10 seconds.

thanks Panic and everyone else, can move on to next bit now :003:

make exhaust (needed to be usable)
fit new springs & fit rear locker (if i get the time)

NB has yet to break his duck with getting this truck to a birties event. A bit of a track record of breaking down before the event.

Will you make it to the breakout or is that too soon?
