Title: OBA is done. BOOM, no its not...
Post by: UKJeeper on January 16, 2006, 08:28:11 PM
Got the OBA bolted together today. Components: Filter, oiler, Sanden, regulator/filter, quick connect. Thought it was ok.

(http://http://www.ukjeeper.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/jeep/yj/oba1.jpg)

Unfortunately i had a problem when i switched it on. The gage got up to about 60PSI indicated. I opened up the regulator some more to see if it was working ok. Looked away and BANG!!! The bowl and guard from the filter blew off and the mount bent up at 45 degrees! The SMC AW4000 (http://www.rswww.com.hk/electronic-comp ... lator.html (http://www.rswww.com.hk/electronic-components-hk/78729-pneumatic-modular-frl-filters-regulators-lubricators-smc-filter-regulator.html)) is rated for 145PSI (10 bar) Max operating Pressure and 220 PSI (15 bar) Max Supply pressure.

So WTF did it go bang??  Bad regulator or did i F something up in the install?

Matt, Answering your post on J33p...

You need:
Switch to turn the pump clutch on / off (Or the elec pump)
Air tank, even if it's a small one.
Compressor
Pressure switch / relay (Can be seperate)
Manifold (Or you can use the tanks multiple outlets if you buy a pukka one)
Pressure guage.... always good
Pressure release valve
Drain plug (bottom of tank to let water out - can be left out, but for how much they cost, not worth it.. The bugger is, it's the lowest point, so tuch the tank up :)
That's the minimum, then you need all the pipe and connectors and that. And as said, you need good pipe from the pump to the manifold / tank as that air will get a tad hot.

MattSavage do a setup here where you can buy "Kits"
http://http://www.mattsavage.com/viair/accessories.html  ~£140 all in) or Kilby do them all too.... failing that, go to your local hydrolic pipe place and I'm sure they'll advise you.

EE :twisted:

Cheers EE, thats EXACTLY what I was after ... fancy giving me a hand to fit it   :lol:

I have been half looking at it for a while for myself, Don't mind helping in the slightest, good practice, but can't vouch for how much help I would be :) I understand the whole principle and how it connects and all that....

Maybe we can get a discount for 2 kits :) (Mine will be on my elec pump for now though)

I forgot one bit... if you're using an A/C pump, you'll need the oil feeder and and oil trap too.

And an air filter is a good addition if you want the pump to last :)

I'm up for that EE, I'm happy installing, its the theory bit that I worry about ... what a team !  Put together a shopping list for the pair, I'll negotiate the discount and buy them, we can sort out the finances later. While you're watching me getting my hands dirty you can sort out my PDA  :lol:

I will as soon as you reply to my text of yesterday :)

"How does the air intake work on your compressor"

I need to know what sort of "Pre Filter" we need for your compressor....

I believe this would include:
tank 91025 (Need to check size, may be cheaper to get a couple of airtanks from a lorry breakers (air brakes)
hook up kit 20052
port fitting kit 90005
air source relocation kit 90007
35" tyre inflator SAV089
Air intake filter (For your compressor)
Oil drip
Oil Trap
Oil return valve

oh, BTW... :finger2:

Okay.... now I am worried :)

What compressor have you got.... is it a A/C compressor or a electric one.... if it's an electric one, what's the duty cycle? (you'll fry your average Halfords compressor quickly filling up the tank.)

Its a pukka A/C compressor that was standard on the 5.7l V8, already fitted and running. There are two pipes sticking out - presume one is inlet and one is outlet (they have both been neatly taped up). Two 'power' sockets, one of which I have the 'plug' that fits it with two wires (this was in the box of spares I got with the vehicle) There is also a 'lump' attached to the side with a big spring inside, it looks a bit like the idler pulley on a TDi, I presume you 'energise' the pump using the cables and this then applies a load perhaps using the idler ?????

Post by: Anonymous on January 26, 2006, 10:52:04 AM
Okay, what size are the in and out pipes?
Title:
Post by: Anonymous on January 26, 2006, 10:58:02 AM
I'll check tonight - how do I measure thread etc or do you just want dia. of pipe ?
Title:
Post by: Anonymous on January 26, 2006, 11:32:05 AM
Hmm, well for the fittings you're gonner have to measure the thread... just don't ask me how....
For the Pipe, It's usually the "Hole" diameter rather than the actial pipe.

Saying that, if you measure the fittings outer diameter, we can always shove a bit of tube on there and hold it on with gaffer tape and cable ties (This bit is a joke)

Is there a big choice in fittings, size wise? Cant I just buy all the options - they cant be that expensive!!!
Title:
Post by: Anonymous on January 26, 2006, 11:35:10 AM
Do you reckon that tank will fit under a TJ?

9" dia x 20" long x 11" high
Title:
Post by: Anonymous on January 26, 2006, 11:40:33 AM
I've got plenty of room on my FJ, might be a bit of a squeeze on a TJ though, couldn't it go in the rear footwell with a timber cover for passengers to put their feet on - that would put it lower than the compressor

Think it would probably be best to get the fittings for the AC from a local hydrolics place... this one might be near you:

Just make sure that it's a 1/4" fitting on the pipe end for the output (The input we still need to work out a filter mech.... neither Kilby or MS mention one) I would guess at going for at least half inch for the input if possible to keep the air flowing (Mind you, would a fuel filter work on the input ????) dunno

Tim,

Just got a new camera, so here's some pictures of my OBA.......

<img src="http://not-allowed.com/d4tev" width="450" height="338"/>

My home made York adjustable mounting plate based on the kilby design.
Two years after fitting the OBA I still haven't got around to painting it or fitting the inlet filter.

On the outlet you have a fitting that goes from NPT to BSP thread, followed by a inline one way check valve, which in turn goes to.....

<img src="http://not-allowed.com/dwjed" width="450" height="338"/>

A four inline manifold, the inlet from the York comes in on the right. Then from left to right you have, a 1/4 quick release female connector, the
outlet to the ARB regulator on the far left, a pressure relief valve (PRV) set
at 10% above the working pressure of 120 psi and finally a pressure gauge.

The outlet on the left hand side of the manifold goes to the pressure differential switch and air tank.

<img src="http://not-allowed.com/8cg5z" width="450" height="338"/>

The differential pressure switch (the black box with a knob!) is set to engage the York compressor clutch at 100 psi and switch off at 120 psi maintaining a minimum of 100 psi reserve to supply the ARB reg set at 90 psi. You can see the ARB reg and pressure gauge in the right of the photo.
The next photo shows the ARB manifold....

<img src="http://not-allowed.com/7bdza" width="450" height="338"/>

ARB manifold running at 90 psi, showing blue airlines running to front and
rear ARB's. The inlet for the manifold comes in at the bottom via the 90
psi reg (see above).

<img src="http://not-allowed.com/84oda" width="450" height="338"/>

and finally the air tank, cant remember the capacity but I bought it brand new from a truck parts supplier for about £20. A fraction of the price you
would pay for one from a jeep supplier etc. The tank has 3 inlets, one at the bottom used as the water drain, one in the centre on the half way line which is connected to the main manifold and one on the end of the tank which is plugged. The tank fits perfectly in-between the two rear shocks directly above the rear axle.

You have to re route your exhaust but I run a home made 3" straight through system.

<img src="http://not-allowed.com/8gjzu" width="450" height="338"/>

and this picture gives a general over view of the system.

I haven't used a oil filter in my system because the York has been modified to stop it throwing the oil out.

Any questions, just ask away.

Sam

I've posted pics to my album of pump fitted to FJ. As you can see the two pipes coming out of the back can be unbolted and removed as a single casting. The fitting on the end of the pipe doesn't have a screw thread so how do you fit pipes?. There is also a 'cylinder' (looks like an ignition coil) mounted beside the pump that looks like it could be part of it. I assume the round thing to the right with a spring inside it is a tensioner that moves when you apply 12v to the pump and then puts the pump under load ?
