hi every one just getting on the last bits of fitting up before we start paint process but come up with a bit of a pain in the ass
ive got a new soft top for the jeep and the first thing is it says the measurement from inside windscreen to inside of body should be 88 and a half inches can get it buy pushing screen out but huge gap under neath worried if fit it pulled down tight the roof will look like sack of crap
sow my jeep is on a m plate but year of manufacture is 73 is there any different in early wind screen frames
any info would be good

can you tell me from where to where this measurement is taken. I could check on my 7 if you want but
what you describe is not very clear.
-
hi the measurment is from inside the wind screen edge to the in side of rear body not tail gate but mine is a cj6
-
Then I think Irishcj6 is your man.
-
Here to help, won't be able to check it though till Monday. I take it that your roof is a Bespoke (spelling prob wrong) one. If so I have the manual so I'll check that also, the other thing is you always have a little bit of adjustment on the bows
-
hope this helps got a funny feeling i need another wind screen frame
-
thanks irish cj6 what year is yours

'68/'69 saw a change in windscreen frames. early ones had wipers at the top, later units with wipers at the bottom.
may all be arbitrary as the frame should have a slide and lock for one section of the rear hoop, this should take out any slack
-
well ive got nearly 2 inches different with the frame pulled down tight where it should be to get my 88 and a half inches need to push it out not good does a early frame stand up more possibly
-
what condition is the cowl seal in? 1/4" thinner on the seal can be an inch difference at the top
-
hi the cowl seal is good
-
If you have the correct windscreen then the wiper motor should be mounted on the outside of the windscreen at the bottom corner, later ones are mounted inside the windscreen.
You will also find when it comes to fitting the top that the warmer it is, the easier it is,so if you can park it somewhere warm i would. :greggmo:

umm know u mention about the wiper moter im sure my old screen did have 2 moters on the inside and the screen im using is on the out side buy the look of things i need a early wind screen :017:

your windscreen is correct for the year of your CJ then, mines a 1974 and has the same windscreen with an external wiper motor.
I would just fit the top with the windscreen clamped down on the cowl seal like it should be (i.e to stop water getting in) and ignore the instructions, because as soon as you try and fit the top there is so much leverage exerted on the windscreen it will end up where it wants to go anyway.
You will also find the top and especially the doors are not exactly a precision piece of engineering like Bestop make them out to be! :icon_rolleyes:

I think like most soft tops of the era, they are as you say a "custom" fit, you attach it at the top of the screen then stretch it rearward to get a tight fit.
-
umm just had a look on morris 4x4 and they do list to different screens
1976 to 1986
1969 to1975
and another one for 1969 to 1975 bottom wipers could the guys with cj6 measure the distance on there for me that it say in the instruction just out of interest if possible
-
just found this on a cj web site
The major difference between the 1972-1975 and the 1976-1986 windshields is the earlier windshields stand straight up and down from the tub while the latter leans back. This effects the top fitment.
