Hi,
Looking at a Wrangler TJ, gearbox (auto) failed, same as Cherokee?
Matey says he's lost the key and fob, I called parts supplier they said main dealer...
Can the transponder/alarm/immobliser be bypassed easily? Or could they be taken off a cherokee and coded in?
Thanks in advance Maf
-
no if i am correct its a 999 same as a cj the cherokee uses aw4, so not a direct swap, for getting past the key transponder prob requires the purchase of an american ecu as uk versions had the security built in to it so not easily by passed.
-
Not the same gearbox in a wrangler (32RH) as a cherokee (AW4) - the only way to bypass the PCM is buy one from the same year in the USA - this does not have the alarm system activated.
-
Hi,
STOP PRESS....
Key found, but does not have key fob with lock and unlock, is the transponder in the key? Previous owner claims it never had a fob... had a TJ same year and that had a fob...
Cheers Maf

Transponder is in the key
-
the transponder is in the key, the fob normally arms the alarm system only so you may be lucky, have you checked the gearbox for fluids and that the transfer box is not actually in neutral ( stupid i know but if the cable has come adrift it can easily happen)
-
I think I may have a spare fob knocking around at home. I'll check at the weekend
..........you'll probably have to remind me though!

Thanks... thats sounding better about the key...
Jeep was driving along then failed...

check the bottom of the bell housing for oil if it has lost the torque converter seal it will have pissed out there and emptied the torque converter hence very shortly after no drive.
-
Similiar tbing happened to me when my bic pen and cable tie rosdside repair coudnt cope with tbe pressure
-
if the key has a round grey end then no fob required.
its built into the key, not sure what year it changed but my 2003 used this system, called skis :greggmo:

As above, no seperate fob on our 98 Auto TJ :icon_winkle:
Whats the level & condition of the autobox fluid. You have to check it with the engine nice & warm while running. Shouldn't show any signs of being burnt.

Big thanks guys...
Will check fliuds etc and report back in a couple of days cheers Maf
-
Lots of fluid in box but black, presume clutch packs...
Think its had a leak as 5 ltrs of transmission fiuld and a funnel under bonnet...
Although the Cherokee box is different does anyone know if it can be fitted?
Thanks Maf
-
burnt out a rebuild is needed........................... xj box to long i think
-
Cost about a grand for a rebuild - Cherokee box is not the same and not an easy option.
-
Thanks, found some write ups through google on people putting XJ Auto into a TJ Manual, most of it relates to different ECU wiring etc...
If I can keep the cost down then the TJ becomes a possible punch hunt truck.... its pretty clean and straight...
I have two cherokee's at the mo, so if I can use a box from one of them then that is happy days...

Think a lot of the stuff is about converting a Manual TJ to take an Auto XJ box... should be easier as it would of course be Auto TJ to take an Auto XJ box...
Our plan is to take the TJ box out, drive the XJ on the ramp and compare and measure...

Found this a couple of weeks ago.
can delete TCM or not but gives manual shift on your auto..............always fun.

Got TJ up and running now, starter and battery gone south...
Tries to drive when you select R or D... lots of funny noises, going to try a fluid flush and filter change...
Details to follow....
