really depends on what tools etc you have in your garage

ask bubba, he has the knowledge and knows what tools are needed  :greggmo:

If you have the ability to press tricky bearings on and off plus a dial indicator you have a good start. Plus a lot of patience is required the fist time.

Dial gauge & magnetic mount are about the only special tools you need. Oh and maybe some long threaded bar to pull the side bearings in. Other wise a straight forward job which is MUCH easier to do with the axle out.

I did both of mine while still in the car, no great problems but I have some experience building diffs in agricultural machinery.
As said, mag mount dial indicator, but also engineers blue or substitute to check pattern and either a rolling torque indicator or fashion up a foot length of bar and a good spring balance to check  pre-load, pretty much a must. I did not use an axle spreader, the diff prised out and re-fit Ok, knocked back in with a copper hammer tight but doable, I figured if bit was tight enough when I started, the same when I finished would be OK. Do half-shaft seals while on, give everything a good clean out.
Apart from results must be good, it is a bit suck and see, take shims out one side, in another check and do again, repeat till perfect!

If your just replacing the bearings, assuming it was built right in the first place, as long as you put all the shims back in the same place they came from it will be ok without messing about trying to set it up.

Its a re-gear so everything is new,so will have to do the full job. Thanks for the help and links guys, much appreciated.I have to change carrier to as its 4.88 gearing and swap auto locker over to so will be a fairly involved job. If I can pull it off it will save a few hundred quid in garage bills. Thanks again. :greggmo:
