Title: Winches
Post by: IrishCJ6 on March 07, 2012, 10:53:45 AM
Ok,

Its near time to start looking at winch options, this is for a pleasure vehicle (not competition) but I don't want a piece of crap either. I have had dealings with Comeup and Superwinch but I'm unsure of others, I was looking into the "Goodwinch" brand? I also want one that will pull a resonable speed not dog slow like the cheapo's, say 180:1 and lower.

All suggestions and comments welcomed.

I was speaking to a guy who uses Goodwinch last weekend, and he swears by them

Goodwinch goldfish tds with the fast gearing, large drum and bowmotor 2 would be the way forwardsfor you.
Looking at the db page in tor, they sre £794 plus the dreaded

Or just a tds 9.5 @ 389 plus the vat

Some thief barrowed my old Warn winch last year and I replaced it with a goldfish one. Quite happy with it so far. It's not an insane competition winch but it does hold it's own.

My top 3:

Warn (IMHO overpriced, because they can be) Goodwinch and Come-up all good.

All need to be stripped regular and treated to some TLC though.

I think the Goodwinch TDS models would be my first choice now, for electrickery winches that is.

Dont forget to budget for some decent electrical cable, isolators and Decent alternator and battery(ies) OR that nice shiny winch is just as usefull as "Tits on a Nun" (Pardon my French):icon_biggrin:

Steel cable or Synthetic rope? Now there's a can of worms....

I would look for secondhand units of the above mentioned, can be cheaper and service yourself. So you get to know how they work, because they will fook up at some point.

PTO is the way to go :003:

How did we all survive as a human race before synthetic winch rope? Amazing really, considering how lethal wire is.....

My preference is steel but probably for different reasons than most,

yes they can be dangerous if miss used but that's just Darwinism in force but for me the real reason is when my truck was made there wasn't such a thing as synthetic rope

I have an ancient warn 8274 on the front of my jeep, now I don't do any winch competitions with it or any thing like that, but it does me just fine.
I have seen a few of these cheapo winches being used recently and they seem like a waste of money, they just don't seem to be able to pull.
That warn seems to just keep going, its got a wire rope as well.

An 8274 is a very capable winch even on just standard form, i also swear by them. You lot using wire, i hope you use a winch blanket or similar, so if it does snap, it doesnt take out your windscreen and or you. Oh well its all horses for courses, next we'll be discussing the merrits of KERR's

Nope. I was saying the polar opposite.

 :hysterical:

I was right! Can of worm.......

I am with Normalbloke in all fairness....

Synthetic has its place in the Recreational Realms. As most peeps misuse and DONT respect steel rope.

Putting a winch blanket aint the be all and end all to safe Winch practice.

Even with Synthetics, there are several ways to misuse use it.

I would always use steel on a My Daily drive, or on Expedition/overlandand Emergency Vehicle. Why?
Because for its dangers, the abuse in a fooked up situation it can take, outways the risk.

and more importantly, steel just looks way way cooler  :098:

whenever u lot bang on about winches I cant decide whether its the usual birty doom laden melodrama y'all so fond of or that I have a ticking time bomb bolted to the front of the truck

Wow, talk about info overload, yeah I think it will be one of the TDS winches, and yes I'm going to go for steel as well, udes them for years with no probs, also the synthetic rope don't like rocks or rubbing over things, also have to be carefully wound in and also cleaned continuously.
