Hi guys,
Ive always looked after my own servicing and after upgrading to a 4x4 am preparing to do a full service.
I'm intending to change the engine oil, filter etc but have noticed on a few forums and sites that they mention replacing diff oils etc.
With the wj what oils should I replace, I know the engine oil obviously and had the gearbox oil changed previously by the dealer (cos I couldn't dip the level myself). What other onese are there I need to change and what spec.

Thanks for the link, I've looked over it and please correct me if I'm wrong but for my 2002 2.7crd wj quadradrive I would then use the following items in bold.
WG Grand Cherokee '99-'04
Engine oil, 2.7L diesel 6.5 5W40 or 10W40 semi synthetic engine oil
Auto transmission 5.0 05013457AA Mopar ATF+4 or equivalent synthetic ATF
Auto transmission 6.5 05013457AA Mopar ATF+4 or equivalent synthetic ATF

I've already had the gearbox done as I mentioned but what is the service schedule for the other oils. Is it every 12000miles/yearly etc or are the likes of the axle oil a longer schedule like with the gearbox.
On that note how often should the gearbox oil be replaced. My car has 127000miles and I believe I'm the only owner to change the gearbox oil so I presume its not a routine maintenance item.

I thought the WJ 2.7CRD gearbox was a sealed unit and hence does not need oil changing.....ever.
But I could be (or heard) wrong.

I might be wrong myself but had read that originally it was intended to be a sealed unit and never needing oil replaced but I think Mercedes ended up having a few problems with lifetime oil not being very lifetime like and fe****g things up so they now recommend changing. This then carried fourth to jeep. After changing it made a HUGE difference to the smoothness of the gear change and sounded much better. Also got rid of a slight whine noise that was normally there at 70mph. The car was originally owned by a friend of mine and after I changed the oil he noticed a big difference when he took it for a drive.
The problem with doing it yourself though is that despite having a dipstick tube at the top of the engine the auto box was never actually fitted with a dip stick as it needs to be done by computer as the level required is different depending on the temperature and the computer dip stick takes the temp and works it all out. £187.00 from memory to get the oil changed including the oil by the jeep dealer.

Currently at Mikes house, drinking beers, and he agrees. It's a sealed unit, no oil change should be required.
(BTW, he wrote the lubrication guide quoted above... ;D)
Edit: he's lol'ing at the idea of a computer dipstick. There is a service dipstick, you read the transmission oil temp from the drb, then use a service manual chart to determine how far up the service dipstick the oil should reach.

Re the other oils, are they a routine service item or are any of them lifetime oils or with longer service intervals.

Ive just double checked and the consile says Quadra-Trac and not Quadra Drive on it.
Am I correct in saying that the oils I need are then the "standard" non quadradrive oils as in bold below?
Also the last oil stated mentions Towing, sorry for the stipid question but Im just double checking. Is this meaning that if I use the vehicle for towing then to use 2.3 4874469 API 75/140 GL5 synthetic gear oil with additive and not 2.3 4874468 API 75W90 GL5 gear oil.

had alook thro the fsm,
service schedule A only lists the transfer case which is done ever 30k or 24 months
service schedule B says to do the axles ever 12k and the transfer case every 30k

your jeep has standard open diffs so definately does not need a friction modifier/additive. i would not bother with the synthetic diff oils just use a quality 75w90 gear oil

Is there an alternative oil that can be used in the transfer box?

petronas arbor MTF 10w30 £21.00 for 5 litres

The transfer box requires an oil with special friction properties to allow for the clutches. Shell AgriFluid works well.

Is there any particular rating to look for on the oil to confirm its compatible with the correct additive.

The 2.7CRD also needs changing its not sealed just Merc decided it was dealer only service item so didn't supply a dip stick. If your interested the transmission dip stick is for sale on eBay...

Sorry for the delay in replying, I'm only getting round to servicing now.
I'm going to buy 5 litres of petronas arbor MTF 10w30 for the transfer box and a standard gear oil of rating 75w90 for the diffs. Does the transfer box take just the 5 litres and how much does each diff take.

Hi, from memory the nv247 transfer case needs 1.6 litres. as for the diffs if your axles have an alloy diff housing you have RBA axles and if i remember right the front needs 1.2 litres and the rear needs 1.65 litres . If your axles have the iron diff housings you have RBI axles and you will have to research the amounts needed for these as i am preety sure they are different capacities.

:icon_eek: The transfer case requires Mopar NV247 fliud or Shell AgriFluid. If you use standard gear oil it will cause clutch shudder. The axles require a minimum od 75/90 but given Jeep's ferocious appetite for bearings, a 75/140 full synthetic would be sensible.

Dont forget rear axle requires LSD addative :icon_winkle:

Only if it's a Quadradrive, in which case both axles need it.
