Well the kit arrived last week, but i will be first to admit i dont like messing around with brakes. The kit looks fairly straight forward but i just need clarification on the claipers as some of you have said that as the bleed nipple is at the top they need to be done off the bracket. Ive taken some pictures so you can see. I've scanned the install manual http://www.4shared.com/office/2-_rwiKX/SSBC_Rear_Disc_Conversion_Jeep.html

Some of you have said it may take two days to do!! and if anyone is up for fluff let me know
-
Schwiiiiiing.
-
near identicle to the the kit i had on my cj8
-
So that mean you have to bleed the bleeding thing upside down then :011:

-
the calipers are slightly different to mine i think and yes they are mounted upside down. I sucked the fluid out with a vacuum bleeder so it went OK. Make sure you bleed the master cylinder fully before connecting that up.
You will need to pull your rear shafts and fit longer studs, a good time to check those bearings and seals, i replaced mine.
you also have to adapt your brake lines over the axle to feed into the little flexis you have in the picture, again i replaced mine. The master cylinder is massive and just about fits in the gap to the airbox. The 2 little solid brake pipes will need re-jigging as they are for LHD and WHATEVER you do DO NOT adjust the actuating rod from the servo into the master cylinder, leave it alone.
Its not an easy kit but works well, i even have a handbrake most of the time :icon_eek:
-
nipples must always be a the top as that is where the air rises to
ask warp
-
Just turn them upside down to bleed it's not rocket science...
I have to do this on the Mafia.
-
i fitted mine at the top
-
Try and fit em at the top.... Sooooo much easier .
Does look very bling and so much nicer than the kit I cannibalised from a ZJ.
Good luck take your time ..... You'll love brakes that work in the mud :hysterical:
-
This kit is different to mine, but any how:
The reason people fit the calipers upside down is because the handbrake cables are not long enough, I found it such a PITA to bleed the calipers off that I bought 2 long side from an XJ handbrake cables, off a breaker, and fitted the things the right way up, Job done tick
-
I have some TJ unlimited (LWB) genuine handbrake cables kicking about if any use - only used for about six months.
-
not sure about jeep calipers but on vw/audi ones the bleed nipple and brake inlet are interchangeable.
shame they are not on your kit.
-
if you think they will help I gladly take them off your hands for some fluff?

-
Let me go and dig them out - will cost you post and a favour.
-
Cheers Peter, let me know how much and I'll PM the address :)
-
Found them!!!
P.M address.
-
does ya kit contain longer wheel studs ?
-
I think so Kev. Would that have any bearing on the handbrake cables?
-
Rich, you're more than welcome to nip round the corner and look at the SSBC kit on mine. I won't be much help though, I won't be in the country for a couple of weeks :icon_super: (Gotta love suprise 40th birthday presents :003:)
-
if you pop them off to bleed then place a piece of metal slightly thicker than your brake disk between the pads to get a better result then fit. or just buy a vacuum bleed to make things easier and less brake fluid wastage
-
P.S I see no discs? :017:
-
Well an update on the conversion. Bubba kindly offered to help and on putting the discs on it was noticed that the shafts had a slight bend in them :( which means no conversion until I buy new axle shafts.....
Been looking at USA Alloy ones but open to ideas on alternatives. Will be phoning around on Monday for prices. Not unless anyone has a new set laying around :010:
-
more to the point - how is the Bastard lookin? Good to see Bubba gettin some time in the workshop
-

he's fat like he has always been :017:
-
If those are the axle shafts that came with the TJ".........
I have a feeling that they were the ones that suffered the abuse of 'Coyote ugly' wheeled with him when he was running 35 x15 x15 Super Swampers. Big heavy feckers.... DOn't think they liked that.
Bad news tho. Got a feeling Warthog might know the whereabouts of Double Js 44 shafts :icon_twisted:
-
Thought I was onto something for a minute,my calipers look almost identical so pmed CB about pads, but blank box and no part numbers :010:

Some people say he lives in the garage and some people say its just in is dreams
-
cockney had one of allys fry ups and now knows why i am a fat bastard

Quick update, I called Lighthouse and they gave me £900 quote for factory shafts (not including the seal kit). Tried stealer, that was even worse. Called Quadratec, yes you can have the USA Alloy ones at a great price but you'll have to wait till the end of May!!!!!
Finally called Summit Racing who have them in stock and will be with me in 6 day. And just as cheap as Quadratec.
But is there a place that could straighten/fix my factory ones?

Upgrade then dump the spaghetti and be done with it...
-
i would say not mate, last thing you want to do is put them back in. Once something is bent it will always be weakened anyway.
Did you check that spline count :icon_winkle:
-
its 30spline i think i am right to think that is the standard shaft spline count for tj
-
Man I feel like I have been dry humped as I gave away the last pair of OE shafts I had kicking about!!!!
£900 prisoners - MOFO'rs
-

call Dan at Wrex racing (http://www.wrexracing.co.uk/) I reckon he'll be able to sort you out something at reasonable $$
-
Imagine how I feel - do you know what? "good luck to them" I will receive twice as much as I have given....karma will be mine.
-
how long do you wanna wait for chromo rear shafts? I will be selling my TJ ones when I go to full floaters
-
would you have a time scale and spline count ?
-
would you have a time scale and spline count ?
std 30 spline, I envisage me not needing them at the end of this year ish, but everything changes.....lets see what does and doesn't break first :003:
-
Id need them in he next few weeks :jpshakehead: but I've ordered a set now :icon_super:
-
Uhm I'm a bit late but could have helped you out Cockney as have a spare set of shafts :icon_redface: sorry!
Glad you got it sorted for a good price though mate :greggmo:
-
Just to finish off this thread. I'd like to say a massive thank you to Bubba for taking on the challenge of my disc conversion. To say its been a mission!!!! The first day everything went well until it was noticed that my axle shafts were bent!!!! So after ordering some Alloy USA ones from Summit Racing and getting them to Bubba only to find that they weren't a pair nearly made me cry. It was only the great engineering skills from Bubba they were made to fit.
I now have back brakes that really work well and if anyone asked if it was worth it I'd say yes, but and it's a big wholesome But, make sure you have the skill and know how to do it.
And the biggest thanks goes to Ali for cooking the best breakfast I've ever had and for allowing Bubba to spend his evenings and weekends doing my conversion.
-
how do you mean they weren't a pair :017: you do realise TJ rear shafts are handed...
-
Did you get universal shafts of equal length that have to be cut to size???
usually with a generous spline length to allow for the chop!
glad your sorted and stopping!
-
Willo, One shaft had 10 holes in it (5 blind and 5 threaded) the other just had 5 threaded holes in it.
