Title: changing axle ratio's are Yukon's any good?
Post by: Stev3uk on May 09, 2012, 06:25:30 AM
Found a Yukon 4.88 ring Pinion package on eBay for the Dana 30 and AMC 20 for my CJ7.

Plan on putting ARB lockers in at a later date ....but would like to get the gearing right first!!

So I'm looking for some advise from you guys,

1/  Are Yukon's OK ?

2/  Is 4.88 too low for 35's (but currently running 32's)

3/ Is this a DIY job (or is worth paying someone and advise on who if so)

All advise and help much appreciated!!

Steve

1 - yes, used them myself
2 - yes
3 - you need a few special tools (not expensive on the bay) and be methodical, plenty of how tos on the web, you will need a master rebuild kit for each axle plus the RnP, think I paid around £600 delivered from the states for 2 axles of bits.

1. Yukon is a good brand
2. Perfect for 35s
3. What scrw said plus plenty of time, no rushing over a weekend to get vehicle back on road for Monday for example (it SHOULDN'T take a whole weekend but best to allow loads of time, space, tools...)

Yukon top brand, got their stronger shafts for dana 35.

I run 4.56 for 34" Swampers and 32" Stt's so you'll be spot on!

Hope that helps, Maf

PS if your doing that, Aussie lockers are only £150 each end, awesome....

Thanks Maf,

I was a little dubious about lockers for road use !!!

I have read a few artices this morning about them, and the Aussie lockers seem to have eliminated the problems with turning and noise and at around £150 each end seem to fit better with my budget.

I was a little concerned about a locker in the rear for road use. Does it make it a little tricky for road use?

As I have very limited knowledge about Jeeps, I didn't realise that I could swap the shafts for the Dana 35's. Is it a straight swap ? Or Am I being slow and you mean you have a Dana 35!!!!

Sorry for all the questions

Steve
