Title: TJ steering box overhaul
Post by: gazjeep on May 28, 2012, 08:12:35 PM
MJS replaced the steering box on the TJ at the weekend, replaced it with an XJ unit I got off d'bay last year, cheers Kev  :icon_super:

Different pitman arm actually straightened up the steering linkages too, had to adjust the steering wheel quite a bit, was half a turn out at first.

Anyway, contatced jaygee for a price to refurb the original to keep in stock, does this seem reasonable ?

Thank you for your recent enquiry

The cost to recondition your own box would be £125.00 plus VAT.  This cost includes return uk carriage upon completion of the work.

The timescale depends on how you send it to us, once we receive the box it should be ready for despatch the next day. We would then return it via courier - estimated time 3-4 days (except for weekends and bank holidays).

Peeps,
Have myself and XJ (98 Cherry) box to go on my TJ - have read on here about a dropped pitman arm... Do i need one of these or will the existing one on the XJ box just fit straight on??

You only need to factor drop arm when a suspension lift is in the equation.

Our TJ has a 2" OME lift, fitted what I believe to be an XJ box with different pitman arm moved the steering about 1/2 a turn out.

Adjusted it back to straight no problem, made for a mush straighter set up of the steering arms from the standard TJ set up

I have a RE Long Arm lift 4.5" - done by FTE. Guessing he'd have put a different arm on then - could I re-use on the XJ box??

Simple answer is YES but be careful you will find a master spline!!!

OK. And that should fit OK onto the replacement XJ box?

On the steering box, there is a splined end with a flat on it which matches up with the mating part, in other words it only fit in one position  :icon_winkle:

Indeed consider it like a key way and only correctly fit one way - I have seen some bush mechanic force the fooooker on though!!

Yeah, they quoted my 125 notes to refurb mine. I found an XJ one on tinterweb so thought I'd just swap it with the existing one. Maybe get the existing one refurbed as a backup / sell it...?

All done and sorted (albeit with the help of a local mechanic to get the pitman arms off!!)
XJ one fitted and working - had to adjust the steering wheel a little as it was off by a few degrees, but other than that a happy (and leak free) TJ!!
I now have a spare TJ box (needs refurb - I have the seal set) if anyone's interested??
If not I'll keep it as a spare.
Thanks to everyone for help and suggestions...
