Title: Indicator conversion?
Post by: ferretjuggler on May 28, 2012, 08:35:45 PM
I finally pulled my finger out and got stuck into the rebuild of my first CJ today.

I want to get rid of the Hella sidelight/indicator units on the wings, and go to sidelight bulbs in the main headlight units, and orange bulbs in the clear lens radiator panel sidelights (they are still there on my '79, rather than the metal grill thingies)

I will keep the orange repeater lights in the front wings.

Is this set up legal?

Will it pass a current MOT test?

I've noticed that the rad panel sidelights (which were disconected and bunged up with bathroom sealant) can only take a "pencil" width bulb.

Can you buy the same style lights that can take a full size 21W indicator bulb?

Or do I have to star messing about with old lucas units and tubes of araldite?

the orange repeater lamps as you call them are really just marker lights and you should have matching rear red ones if they were originally fitted ( thats assuming you are on about the one where the 2 wheel drive badge is normally placed)

should pass the mot I have never had a problem with the old cj or the yj with indicators in the grill

You are allowed indicates in the grille but I belive you have a measurement to the side makers!!!

Aha.

I thought there might be a fly in the ointment.

Any idea of that measurement please?

I've seen clamp on "MOT Lights" fitted before now.

They clamp to the front bumper and appear once a year just before MOT time

don't need them as the vehicle was not originally designed for them so it gets away with it 99 times out of a hundred or 100 times if you use a regular mot garage.

Ferret, wanna see pics of your CJ  :003: ..... and the rebuild. :greggmo:

I've got the standard headlights and the orange pilot lights doubling up as front indicators.

Bubba had it MOT'd this way last October.

and got the 'four wheel drive' badge in the recess of the front fender flares.

CJs are too old to need repeaters for an MoT anyway.

Rebuild  :icon_eek:
I think that's a bit ambitious calling a rebuild at this point, all I've done so far is scrape off lots of dodgy black paint and filler  :icon_eek:
When I have finished the basic welding I think I'll start calling it a rebuild.

My little furry helpers seem to have trashed my quite decent 12M pixel Pentax (along with the rest of my house), if I can't revive it, a new camera phone is on the cards for next week.

Yes, a bit premature to call it a rebuild possibly.

Anyone can take something to bits and throw it all over the garden, it only becomes a rebuild when it actually starts coming back together again.
