Hi, I should have taken a pic of my carb on the 82 cj7 4.2 but I wont get a chance till next weekend. What was the stock carb on these although this was rebuild in 1999 so it may have a different one.Looks like this one http://www.jeep4x4center.com/jeep-carburetors/images/jeep-carburetor.jpg (http://www.jeep4x4center.com/jeep-carburetors/images/jeep-carburetor.jpg)
While trying to tune the carb today the silencer exploded, it was running too rich so must have gotten too much petrol and BANG. I was assisted by a 'real' mechanic.
Anyway when i figure out what carb I have how do i go bout tuning it. It was running perfect before the winter. Last month it woudnt start cause the accelator cable was stuck with gunk around the carb. I spray wd40 on it and it cleaned it up but then it idled very high. So I started 'messin' with it...thats when I called in the 'real' mechanic.
Is there a proper process I should follow or is it trial and error. Pointers to online posts would be helpful if they already exist.

not to any book but I have a general method I use that seems to work.
set main jet to 2 1/2 turns out, run till warm, set idle screw to get 800-1000rpm run for 5 mins, check plug colour and adjust main jet to suit (if black lean it off, if beige make it richer)

its a carter ...can be a pain in the arse to get running right.Idle tubes block very easily .
