Can you please share your thoughts regarding the 2.5 engines in a YJ/TJ.
What are they like on/off road?
Is it worth considering a 4.0 conversion?
-
to be fair they do a very creditable job and i would not see a long term prob with one not worth converting to a 4.0 just buy a 4.0 in the first place if thats what you wanted to start with

 ???????
2.5l engines have a lot going for them, there's a good weight saving and with the less torque they have, they are easier on running gear, diff's etc. Plus less plugs and leads to buy
The downside is you have to push them that bit harder on the road especially with larger tyres.........nothing a re-gear can't sort out though.
Probably a good question for Greggmo!

I dont see the point in a 2.5 when there are so many 4.0's about......
greggmo's truck is so capable cos of what hes done to it & how he uses it......but EVEN he was considerin more donkeys a while back....
start with a 4.0 then chuck a V8 in it.............now theres an idea for my YJ!!!!

no not bigging them up but they have there place

the main thing you miss with the 4 popper is the on road power and exceleration. but hey if i wanted to go fast i would buy another bike. off road they work just the same if your tires are not too big. i never got my 4 popper so stuck that it wouldnt turn the wheels. i only considered the power upgrade to deal with 33,s but went for the re-gear instead. i also think 35 crap axle is a bit safer with less grunt without a serious cash injection. anyway why you askin mark???

As the others say, 2.5 is fine offroad, My 2.5 YJ disgraced many a 4.0 in the gooey stuff. On the blacktop, you do have to push them harder to keep up, negating any chance you had at saving fuel and making driving a bit less relaxed. Unless you can get one silly cheap, you're better off going 4.0. I wouldn't consider converting a 2,5 to 4.0 as it would cost loads more in money and hassle than selling it and getting a proper factory 4.0 instead.

My 2.5 was fine off-road,and it could go where Trents 4.0 couldnt....Eh Trent??? remember S-Bends??? 8)

On all YJs, first job is to look in the front grille and see if that air intake hose is still at bumper level. If it is, cable tie it up at slam panel height at the very least.

I think the best thing to do is have a go in one.
I have had no problems playing in my 2.5, and I like that it is cheaper to insure and run.
The 2.5 is not a slouch on the road either, granted it is not a race car and corners crap but it can keep up and I do my fair share of overtaking.
However there is still that niggle in the back of my mind that it is not a 4.0L or a V8.
It is the same sort of niggle that I get knowing it only has a 2" lift and not a 4" lift.
Not worth converting unless you had to due to a catastrophic failure.
Well that is my tuppence worth.
