Title: Help 1997 2.5 petrol Cherokee Wont Start
Post by: prmacb on June 11, 2012, 02:58:06 PM
Hi all,

I need some help. Bought my first Jeep yesterday. Drove it home 60ish miles. Was in and out all day yesterday with no problems at all. Today when I went to start it it turns over fine but just wont fire. Am i missing somthing? Is there a fuel cut off i might have hit.

Any help would be greatly appreatiated. I am getting it in the ear from her indoors for buying a duff car!!!

Cheers
paul

Welcome. sorry to here your trouble.

Sounds like an immobiliser issue.

Hi tag,

No security light. But if i sit in the car for a few mins it will come on (flashes) and the engine wont turn over until I press the unlock button again. I guess this is normal.

Yes clutch is down. It is turning over just not fireing.

Thanks for your help

Is there anyway to test it? Would that not trigger the check engine light? I have plugged my code reader in and there was no codes?

check the connection that's under inlet manifold , follow the wire from the sensor that comes up back of engine right side
should go to plug/socket connection under manifold. mine came loose fell on exhaust melted and caused your problem intermittent......... :greggmo:

Ok there is a spark, Also the plug was wet with fuel so I assume that it is getting fuel. This one has got me!!

It doesnt make sence. Yesterday it was sweet as a nut. Been trying to think of anything strange. Fuel light came on on the way home last night (about 1 mile away) so I thought there might be a chance it needed fuel. I have since put 2 small jerry cans in but that has made no difference.

I have even spoken to the bloke I bought it from and he has never had any problems. I know he would probably say that but he seems genuine.

Only other thing is that its not parked on the level. Not on a hill but off level left to right if that makes sence. Nothing drastic but that should not make any differance should it?

Thanks for your help.

after you cleaned them and dryed them out , don't touch the pedal let it sort itself when you turn it over.

No luck. Dried them all out. Left pedal alone and still nothing. How can I test the fuel preasure?

there's a bleed valve but bear in mind it will/ should fire out when you press it, on the end of the fuel rail.

Oh and check all the fuses in the PDC ( fuses box) under the hood.

Right

I have checked all the fuses. The ones under the bonnet anyhow and they are all fine. I cant see a bleed valve on the fuel rail. What would happen if i put some fuel in the throttle body. I know I used to do that on my Cab cars....

Tag.

Do you have a red flashing light / LED to the left of your steering wheel? I do and I am starting to wonder if I have some sort of 2nd immobiliser or kill switch fitted somewhere that I might of hit when I was cleaning it last night! I also have some extra wires under the bonnet running power to somewhere. I assumed they were the radio (not standard) but I pulled the fuse and it still worked.

Time to pull the dash apart I think.

Well the extra wires were the remains of a old car phone. Still bemused by the extra LED.

Just be aware of anything odd with the jeep electrically as the problem could raise its head again. Sounds like you might have a poor connection somewhere in the ignition circuit which could be a bitch to trace. Just check all the connections for positive fitment etc at least then you will get to know the jeep more

Posted from my phone as its quicker than the pc connection

Yes and it was after we had some really heavy rain so I think something might have got wet. It was parked on an angle too which might have not helped the rain drain away properly. I will have a good look over it at the weekend.

I am wondering if you have a windscreen leak./ possible hole thru rust damage around the base of the winscreen /bulkhead.

Water has got to be getting in somewhere,

once its dry and the jeep starts up again could you get the hose out.

Soak say the scuttle below the front screen, then see if it starts, if yes try soaking another area ie the bonnet to see if water is getting in and getting the ECU or similar wet and keep going?

Fairly basic but may give you a start in a location.

If you lift the bonnet this morning when its been raining is anywhere moist?

it will be coming in usually drivers side scuttle,  and running down onto the fuse box above your feet and corroding the terminals on the back of there I beleive, see a good few cherokee's with water coming in there, try parking it in the same position but the other way round to check!

Had this problem of water ingress when I had a new screnn fitted on my old XJ, essentially not enough sealer used. The weather strip around the outside is just for decoration, no really it is  :icon_winkle:
Screen had to come out twice from original fitting until enough sealer had been used to do the job, has it had a new screen lately ?

This makes sence as woth times its not started its been parken on a kerb so all the water would have ran towards the drivers side. I am going to have a good dig around today.

Thanks, Paul
