Title: Starter for ten....
Post by: Bat Fastard on February 13, 2006, 09:03:01 PM
OK here is your starter for ten points.....
What is the difference between the ratios of a gearbox for a 2.5 diseasel and for a 2.5 petrol?
Both are Jeep units of the same type etc.

Or to put it another way what should I expect if I put the diseasel one in my 99 TJ while I get the original one overhauled?

Answers on a post card etc...

Ta muchly chaps. :D

Tell us when you find out :D . If your just doing it as a tempo, then it'll be worth trying, or do you have to fork out cash for the diesel box?

jeep used the nv3550 as standard on most jeeps after 1999 the diesel has an awsome first gear ratio of 3.12-1 compared with the 3.93 you have at the moment
fun offroad but 5mph 1st gear onroad @3500rpm!!!

teh 4ltr is 3.73 but has 3.07 axles to make up for it

Hi Gwyn!

You have a very dodgy avatar there mate.
I got your e-mail, but thought I would throw the question to the group.
I like the idea of trying out a mental crawl speed even if it is only for a while. (you never know I might like it or maybe it will slow me down a bit and I might do less damage).

I texted you today on your new moby number.... did you get it?

Hi Dingo..... I have the diseasel box, and would like to try it.
I may still change the oil a couple of times first in the over optimistic hope that the nasty crunchy bit round 3rd gear is taken away by the oil pixies.

yes m8 got the text   still working at 5:30 kos will think you have another woman!!!
you could get round the gearbox problem by going up to 33's or 35's

33s or 35s...... now you are talking.

I like the sound of this gearbox even more now.
How will the little 4 banger cope with it all?
I am aso bound to rub a bit somewhere with the extra rubber.

Who do I know that has bigger rubber on their TJ that would let me 'borrow' their wheels for a bit?.........hmmmmmmmm.

sean you are going to need a 4.5" lift for 35's and the 2.5 will handle it just fine but your 5th gears is still .77-1 and 4th 1-1 so you will loose both of them but gain 1st and 2nd....... possibly

there is so little info on the xj diesel gearbox so im afraid its a suck it and see

an old trick years ago when i had my RS turbo (does that make me a chav??) was to replace the gearbox with a diesel van box.
it gave a 0-60 of about 6 seconds but topped out at 100mph

of course i never street raced r5 gt turbos or did 100mph in mine i drove like a grandad to conserve fuel like every 19 year old did

Hmmmmmm....
Might have to rethink this one.
I don't want to be popping wheelies in a TJ, or burning spoty youths off at the traffic lights.

Gwyn I am sure you could be called many things, but not a Chav.
