Hi All,
Our mechanic collared me today to let me know that the MOT on the XJ is due soon. I'm a little concerned, as it's had an advisory on its worn steering box before, and the steering now slightly knocks (intermittently). The Jeep's not had an MOT since I've been driving, so I'm a little new to how it all works etc. :icon_redface:
A few questions...
How bad does the steering box have to be to fail?
Will the MOT pick up on the steering knock?
How much would sorting the steering be likely to cost?
-
it will fail if its leaking or got excessive play, best thing to do is find some one close breaking one with a decent box and throw that on it.
-
Okay, thank you. How much play do you think is excessive?? I know it's fairly hard to quantify without actually trying it...
Yeah, a used steering box is probably the way to go, although I'm not aware of any XJs breaking around here. Do the pre-97s have the same steering box??
-
Bryn, you sure Henry Orchard in Snozzel hasn't got one ?
-
Good point, I'll give them a call soon. Are there any other places like that around Kernow?? The only one I can ever think of is Combellack's, and I've only ever seen one Jeep there.

It works.....
