Been reading on t'web and some people stick the shims between the carrier and bearing with the bearing holding the shims in place, others stick the shims on the outside of the bearing between the bearing and case.
The latter seems easier time wise but which is the best way to assemble them?
-
If its stock then between the bearing and carrier .
ARB's are the other way round

any idea why?

i have noticed this a few times with some comercial places .............. not talking of arbs just the shim position

seems a quicker way of doing it, but was pointed to the thread on here with the trashed crownwheel and bearing shims hanging out.
Just got to find a bearing puller & I am set to give it a whirl

dont skim on the bearing puller

Make yourself some setup bearing with the old set, that will make adjusting the shims so much eaiser. Mine are between the carrier and the bearing. I would say it would be very difficult to get the shims to stay in place the other way especially when you are pulling the carrier in and out during setup.

That may have been mine. I rebuilt it with the shims on the inside of the bearing on the ring gear side on on the outside on the air line side. ARB have a bevelled master shim (0.098" thick) on the outside to protect the thinner shims. Newer ARB lockers have shims on the outside on both sides of the locker I believe. I used brand new bearings to make setup bearings when I did it.
