Title: NP249
Post by: Carlos Fandango on August 14, 2012, 09:53:22 AM
This transfer box is fitted to the 5.2 ZJ / ZG 1997 Grand Cherokee,I have a friend in France who wants to knowif it is possible or what level of difficulty is requires to swap it for something else or is the NP249 fitted to another Jeep.
Or is it the same internally as another transfer box so he can get parts ?????????

i believe there standard zj t/cases
but he mite want to fit a NP242 of a Xj as the NP249 are crap and an used one may be as bad as the one he pulls off

the NP242   has the following settings: 2HI, 4 full-time, 4 part-time, N, 4LO
witch may be better for him as 2hi will give better MPG on tarmac

the nano saving on mpg will be outweighed by the extra wear on the rear tyres, 2-hi is a waste of time & rubber

you want an NV242 from a post 97 XJ an it will just slot right in! props will be fine!
if you get an NP242 from a pre 97 with a snout then youll have to swap the transfer input shaft as its just too short to make the seal in the back of the gearbox.  its a complete strip down of both boxes to extract the 249 shaft an fit it to the 242.
much easyer option is the post 97 242.

you should be good with the 5.2 haveing  a rear dana 44??? if its only a 35 then start kissing godbye to rear diffs if your like me!!! (heavy foot an tail happy on the road)

The 242 might not like the torque of a V8

They did have them but not sure what sort of variant!
I know the wj's had what they called a super 242 but don't know what the "super" part was, I just heared they were rocking horse poo!!!

Give me a year to get my 360 fitted an ill let you know how the 242 stands up to 37's :)

US WJs have the 242HD on the v8s, IIRC it has a wider chain and different tail housing, could be beefed up else where to, never made it to Euro WGs though hence a PITA to source one.
