Title: TJ Auto mod
Post by: Anonymous on February 26, 2006, 04:50:55 PM
After talking to Bubba & Gregmo last night about pro's & cons of auto vs manual TJ's, the only drawback surrounding an auto seems to be water damage through a breather hole that is poorly located on the gearbox.

This can cause upto a couple of grands worth of repairs. Did some surfing & found this.

Seems like another essential Phatphux mod

Also worth mentioning that the later 4-speed doesn't have this problem, and has a breather towards the top of the casing that can be extended with a flexible hose.

This style of Chrysler transmission appears in all YJ and TJ autos up to 2002, and, I suspect it's close relative fitted to ZG/ZJ 4.0,5.2 and 5.9 and WG/WJ 4.0 and 3.1 TD will also have the same problem.

Might be worth speaking to Chris at Surrey Off-Road.  I believe that he's carried out this mod, and his prices might be more reasonable.

FWIW, Chris did a vacuum test on my 4-speed, before fitting the snorkel and breather kit, as it was the first 4-speed that he'd encountered.  It held a vacuum just fine, and extending the breather was pretty starightforward.

Probably worth surfing the US sites for more info, as TJ autos are more common out there.
