Title: New project
Post by: cleggy on October 19, 2012, 08:51:22 PM

Over the next 12 months i will be taking the tub off and it will become a tubed buggy and hopefully having a v8 a auto box and a atlas so my question is what do you think the best combination is which engine and box combination would you go for? Money IS an option LOL Any information would help ( This is to be used for challenge events) The object of this project is to make it a lot lighter .............Cheers in advance

This is easy!!

SBC and TH400, look at a Diablo frame they do one that uses the Wrangler chassis - you could drop your balls and go full tube, this is the place you will be at in the end.

Agree with IOM..... But any option of LS 5.3 or 6.0will be cheaper than SBC rebuild type of thing and if you are trailering to events O/D is an expense worth skipping so go TH350 or TH400
But the 400does take 30bhp to turn over before you start going anywhere The LS is easy to get 500bhp from even as a 5.3 wrecker........have fun..... :icon_twisted:

cleggy, what events have you done in it so far, and what doesn't work, I mean its a great looking truck and all that and on paper it should work, so apart from making it lighter what are the issues??
Not being funny but winch/punch challenges are a completely different beast to p&p's.

The reason was i set my heart on a vw t5 campervan so thought if i could make my jeep lighter it would tow it but i think i will struggle. But now ive got this build in my head. So started buying bits once ive got them the build will start. So it will be something like the guy that won KOV just cheaper .

Cleggy,

If you go Altas, suggest you factor in a long lead time, ordered my 4SP end of May, it was delivered in mid Sept., so much for 6 week lead time. Rumour has it that the US military ordered 600 units at the same time! For info, bought mine via Dan at Wrex Racing, AA wouldn't deal direct. http://www.wrexracing.co.uk/ (http://www.wrexracing.co.uk/)

I have an Atlas and a Stak both are two speed, amazed that you have a 4 speed and struggling to understand your logic?

Hedging my bets so to speak. I've run a Terralow 4:1 for over 10 years, although its served me well, it allowed Jeep to crawl to places where others have had to use power, there have been times when I've wanted a higher ratio.  So as nobody makes a 3 speed (please don't proove me wrong), I opted for a 4 sp so I get 2.72, 3.8 and 10.1. At the mo, can't see me using 10.1 but who knows. As its been 7 years since the Model Ts last major overhaul and the M201 is finished, thanks to Willo pointing me at some D60s, I've decided to totally revamp the model TJ based on my own and the expierence of a few challenge guys in the UK, apart from D60s its going on a severe diet, getting a refurbished auto box, new body, new steering.

Yes but did not want to piss on his bomb fire - allegedly Mike is going auto this has many variables to the build - most people go for the 2200 torque.

Should have said excluding Stak, seriously considered one but opted for Atlas as I could reuse TJ speedo stuff.  Not alleged to be going auto, am going auto, Jeep is on the ramp, Atlas and auto seperated by about 13mm - waiting for AA spacer plate to be delivered.
