I've got rust bubbling up through the paint on both front wings in exactly the same place. Without examining too hard it would appear to be where there are some sort of reinforcing plates on the underside, maybe spot welded to the wing. Anyone else had this?
-
Gaz had the same thing last year on his TJ
-
The tight fisted bastard part of me says fix them, but the realist in me says it will only come back so get new wings. I've also got a couple of failed spot welds at the back next to the rear door. Not sure what to do about those either. I could try drilling and grinding them out and fitting rivets in there place.
-
Got the same thing on the TJ Rob and I bought,if you are okay at welding and are competant, you grind down the wings with a flappy disc to see the full extent, and then cut out the rust area and weld in new plate which is what we done yesterday
-
just done this on a tj here, there is as you say a strengthening plate under the wing which is a great mud trap, when i cut the rust out there was loads of mud trapped up there,so make sure you keep it clean guys!
-
Cool, not just me then. Welding sounds like a good option. Mine is serviceable if a tad unattractive. Nothing an angle grinder can't put right though, heh heh! I'll probably be sealing that plate when I'm done too.
-
The same thing on mine, I have brought 2 new wings but have not had them spayed and fitted yet. That can wait until the newyear. The only permanent fix is to cut the strenghtening plate out from under the wing and erase the problem altogether, and paint the underside with POR15 once repaired.
-
MAD, MAD your all MAD I tell yer!!! You will bend the front wings soon as you adventure of tarmac, run with it!!
-
They won't bend as easily if they are not full of rust holes. Anyway, I thought the object of off roading is surely to go around the rocks and trees, not through them.

Feck...... Ouch and stuff.
Tube fenders tied into grill shaped tubed protection ......can't beat it...... £50 of tube will do it........and another £50 of sheet steel, fasteners and paint stuff....... Job done....... :icon_super:
-
It jumped out and bit me!!
-
cut out the entire area of the strengthening plate & weld in a complete piece or it will come back again ..... I know this :icon_winkle:
-
P'raps they should paint the trees dayglo orange for you Pete. And I assume your car is fitted with one of those new fangled steer-ing wheels? :steeringwheel:
-
You have the jump seat when next we meet!!
Steering is for pussy I'm going-that-a-way....
-
You have the jump seat when next we meet!!
As long as it's a dual control vehicle, you're on!..... I'll bring the orange paint.
-
Bring thunder pants!!!
-
ooh err! I'm afraid my wardrobe is a bit light in that department, p'raps I can get someone to weld me up a pair strong enough for a spell riding shotgun in your truck.
-
Shut up and belt in...no screaming like a girl now, had enough of that with the "KY" crew....
-
4 point harness I hope, don't want to be ejected out the window or something.
Truth is.....I hit a tree once. Although to be fair it was in a race, it didn't damage the truck and I managed to drive off before the marshalls spotted it and could penalise me for it.
-
TREE, TREE I run over tree's...
-
:iagree: yup he does I can vouch for that, he goes where few jeeps have gone before!
-
Or indeed want to go, as far as I can see.
-
Ouch ..... fighting talk :icon_eek:
-
Strike one has a second seat envey "that is" not may have sat in it for the second time.....
-
It's not Petes fault really, apparently he doesn't believe in steering wheels. Although, I did once know a guy who used a pair of mole grips clamped onto the splines on the steering column, and he seemed to get on ok. Don't recall him hitting any trees though.
-
Talk is cheap.....
-
Eh! I'm not fraidy of your driving. After 25 years as a passenger in the wifes car, it'll be a walk in the park.
